I am currently in discussions with a UK manufacturer of gas struts.

I am looking to replace my tail gate struts as my gate operation is rather jerky and does not open fully.  I have a Gen 1 facelift.

I have supplied approximate dimensions, and received an estimated price.

I would be extremely grateful if any member could provide me with an unwanted strut. I'll pay the postage.

Condition is not important, but the item needs to be dimensionally intact.

In my opinion, although these are not as inexpensive as some sourced from a well known foreign ebay type business. They are considerably less costly than Toyota OEM parts.

Feel free to send a PM if you prefer.

I will not be selling these items, or acting as an agent; but will disclose the supplier (if it all pans out).

Progress was slow with the UK supplier who insisted on having an example to work with.

Unfortunately I was not willing to be without a tailgate mechanism.

So I bought from a well know ebay supplier.

The parts I bought are for a Gen 2, I have a Gen 1 facelift.

I did check the part numbers on the EPC for both vehicles. Identical; so I ordered some.

They don't fit. Fittings look OK but length is about 4 inches too short.

The bore of the larger tube is also about 4 inches too short.

Fortunately they were only £25 or so.

I will try and return them. It will be interesting to see how 'helpful' the vendor is.

there are several codes for the struts, translating it looks like the code for power back door is different to unpowered

Thanks Chris, that explains it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I need to look at the drawings again !

I only bought them as someone else (on here) had said how good they were; perfect fit !

Maybe they didn't have a powered door. Do you ?

The 'quality' does look very good.

Thanks for your help.   Roger

no power boot for me, also the chassis base is different for the 10 vs 20 series, so I imagine the mounting points are not in the same location.

I wonder if the offline official toyota EPC will give you a more accurate part number vs the online tools

I'll contact my local, very friendly, Toyota dealer.

I did check the online EPC for ANH10 and MNH10 and ANH20.

I'll check again. I thought I checked properly and they were all the same !

No hurry. It works fine I just would like more headroom.

It could be the lifting motor becoming 'tired'

definitely 'break out' boxes that are detailed by asterixis in the drawings dependant on the trim level of the vehicle, for those dampers.

Did your old dampers have a letter marking? you look it up in this box and it tells you the type of damper you need.

There are ones for cold weather region alphards, and ones for power doors.

So maybe subtle differences in pressure which may explain why they are not holding the door up as far?

On my old regius I would occasionally almost scalp myself because the door didn't extend fully in the cold.

I dont think its the motor, that is only required to get the door to the critical point where the pistons take over

Thanks again Chris,

You are so helpful, and so reliable.

I am kicking myself.

I cannot believe I overlooked this.

I saw the asterisk 3 and ignored it, poor concentration !

Must have been another late night.

I have looked for markings before, without any real success.

Most is hidden by the strut itself.

However, now I know what I am looking for, I'll look again.

At £25 spent I'm not too bothered about it.

I'll look for markings and get on Amayama.

Thanks, once again.

Hi Chris,

I have been checking the EPC (again and again).

I had been focusing on trying to find a standard unit that fitted across all Gen 1.

Silly really.

Now, after your prompting, I can see there are 5 options for my model year.

I'll get my Google Translate on it tomorrow. Try and decipher the variants !

Hi Chris,

I finally got around to checking which tailgate struts I have.

Annoying thing is all the wording is in Japanese; except for this very large, and obvious, letter K !

Until your message, because of my oversight reading the EPC, I had not paid any attention to it.

Talk about can't see the obvious !

My struts extend almost fully, just half an inch extra if I push them to their maximum extent.

I have decided not to renew them yet, but wanted to thank you again for your help.

Just to satisfy my curiosity I still have to decode/translate the several Amayama options to find the correct one.

There's always something else to do, isn't there.

You could PM me an offer for my unused new ones, as they can take quite a while to deliver !

They are plain black.

Via PM I could send you dimensions, may be a photo.
