We’re just about to buy a 2010 Vellfire, keep seeing Ben Hau being mentioned and as far as I can work out, sorting the radio without changing the head unit? Any info would be very much appreciated!

Apologies for the delay. I now have Android Auto and Carplay available, so can play radio via my phone, in English! Phone has to be connected via cable, so gets some charge whilst in use, but minimal.

It's not a bad setup, but the head unit shows its age by the screen definition.

I would like a modern head unit, thats autonomous for radio, but it seems that having Theatre Sound is an obstacle to that option.

I have contacted a guy who fitted a modern head unit, and put the original in the central cubby. The two were linked somehow, and he retained front n rear cameras, with theatre sound.

My ideal would be a 12" Tesla style screen, but retaining all 3 cameras and theatre sound.

Thanks for the reply. I managed to get hold of Ben Hau who was massively helpful. After sending pics of the head unit, it seems it’s a bit specialist with the loom and he didn’t think it could be changed but he could put car play on in about 2 hours. Asked about android auto and he said he couldn’t guarantee it as he has had a lot of issues with android. So once we get the van, we’ll be off to Birmingham!

Yes, Ben is really nice guy. His unit is a bit of a mystery tour!

I use Android Auto with my Samsung phone. Its OK but could be better, but thats no reflection on Ben.

He was genuinely helpful with great info. Just struggling to insure now, tried Jap Cover and as soon as I mentioned conversion it was a straight ‘no’. Fun times ahead!

I was with Aviva, but they didn't want to know once converted. Now with Admiral.

Managed to get a decent quote with Adrian Flux for £440 for both of us…

Yes, I was bumped by Aviva.

Just a small point with Adrian Flux.

Check which company is actually underwriting your vehicle.

The quote I received was from an unknown company, wasn't competitive, and charges to pay monthly were silly (polite version).

I then went with Aviva, but the market keeps changing. Am now with part of LV.

Seems the issue is as soon as I mention conversion it becomes a problem, which is frustrating..

Most conversions have compressed gas, i.e. hobs.

Scenic has a sister company that will insure a conversion provided the conversion is completed by a conversion company they 'recognise'.

My converter was not on their list.

So they passed me to Scenic who were only too happy to help.

It can be the same with LPG conversions too.

Some companies are OK with them, others are not.

Good hunting.

Yet another potentially stupid question…..not got the van yet but took loads of pictures and I can’t see any sign of usb or audio ports. When Ben coverts is there some sort of physical add on that needs to be placed into the wiring loom to act as an interface? Apologies for going on, just keep thinking about things!

Bens conversion includes a USB port, which is necessary to connect to your phone for Carplay & Android Auto. I think you can alternatively plug in a USB stick, with pre loaded music.

Thanks for that, I’ll try not to harass you again!
