I also was told it is substantial saving but then someone said recently is about 20 quid off. I'm curious to find the facts

been doing some digging on this lot of looking on the net there is a website if you put your reg no. it says £165.00 a year when you read the government website it says cars registered after 2017  dual fuel its £165.00 that applies to new cars not Japanese imports registered after 2017 . my tax was £280 last year now £295 that tells me they are taxing you on the size of the engine maybe i did get a discount maybe my tax would have been a lot more with out the lpg . hope to find out soon as i have emailed dvla tax office to find out will let you know the out come.

Hi Lee,

I believe road tax is based on the year the vehicle was made, not the year it was imported.

If you are paying £295 I would suggest you are paying the single fuel normal rate.

The lpg only saves around £10 a year... Unless its changed. Might be 20 now. I have two Subaru Outbacks (don't ask?) and the lpg one is no more than a £2 monthly saving. Can't recall exactly.  Alphard lpg as well but it's half the cost of the outbacks anyway so that's a bonus.

because the vehicle is an import, it will default to the standard rate which is now £295.

That default value trumps all other considerations, even the fact a 20 series is equivalent to euro VI.

If it didn't default to that, we would actually be worse off, based on weight and engine size would push us into the £480 category.

so I'm not going to rock the boat arguing with the DVLA!

This is absolutely correct. Can’t remember which year they changed this but if I’m not wrong all Japanese imports come under the same tax bracket. This means the Alphard and the  Prius pay the same amount in road tax. 😆
