Sharon H Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 I have tried looking online but I'm getting conflicting info....does anyone know if I can buy an Alphard from UK (looking at one in Reading, so I would fly over and get the boat back again with the car) or would I be required to pay Customs and/or VAT on the purchase. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but I'm unsure as it will have been originally an imported vehicle from Japan....please help before I commit to buying!

Since Brexit I am confused about how UK Taxes operate in Northern Ireland, and what is taxable and what is not ! Have you seen the vehicle yet ? Have you had an AA or RAC Inspection ? Is the vehicle already registered in the UK ? Does it have a current MOT ? If buying from a business you will have to pay VAT, which should be included in the price. Make sure. Are you buying from a registered dealer that is a registered limited company ? You MUST get a VAT receipt for safety. You need to talk to HMRC in Ireland to be sure. Imho, you will not be liable for Customs; any due should have been paid already. BUT, if buying from a business you will have to pay VAT, if buying privately you will not. If buying from a dealer you will have the normal Consumer Law protection, If buying privately you will not. Indeed only companies and individuals registered with HMRC can (legally) charge VAT. Hope this is helpful in raising questions. Talk with HMRC or visit their website, just to be sure.
