We have a 2008 Vellfire and both being hearing impaired we find the constant noise drives us mad when having a conversation or listening to our sat nav.  we have to stop and wait for her to finish. 
We have read somewhere that this can be disconnected and even removed does any one know how as MOT Ddue soon and would like to have them the information so they can do this for us. Thank you

Is the etc box in the little coin box on the right side of dash?

If so, just keep pressing the volume down button that is on it, until it mutes.
