Laurence Posted December 10 Posted December 10 A few times I've had a jolt from the transmission when I first take it out of park after starting up. After the initial jolt everything is fine. It's probably after the car has been unused for a week or so. Has anyone else experienced this?

Most automatics will produce a (small) 'jolt' when initially shifted into drive as the auto-transmission loads up ready to move off. Keep the footbrake in until you are ready to move off. They will also move (settle) forward or backward (depending on the slope) a little when parking up unless you apply the footbrake first. It really depends on the magnitude of your jolt whether you have a problem, or, more likely, everything is OK.
Chris.ac Posted December 11 Posted December 11 How are you parking? Put vehicle in neutral, before the parking brake is applied, otherwise the gearbox is under tension against the parking pawl pin. 1

I had an auto Merc with the gear select on stalk and auto electric brake (my first auto), then got the Vellfire and wondered why I had a jolt when I moved house and parked on sloped drive. I thought the gearbox was on its way out, then worked out to put parking brake on then into park
Laurence Posted December 13 Author Posted December 13 I have been driving automatics for about 35 years now. Occasionally when I drive a manual I forget and wonder why it's not changing gear itself!! I always park in the same place on a virtually level drive. I'm inclined to think the last two replies are hitting the nail on the head. It's quite possible I have let it roll forward in park before applying the parking break and then selected drive with the transmission under tension. It's only happened 3 or 4 times in just over a year. Many thanks everyone. I will make a conscious effort to do things in the right order.
