License plate light cover remover

I need to replace a bulb in one of the license plate lamps. 
 

I know that if I remove the internal trim I can access it. However on one of cuttothechase videos. A comment suggests it can be done from the outside without removing the interior trim. 
 

Has anyone done this and got any advice or photos of where to push/put trim removers etc to get the covers off?
