Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a peculiar issue with my 2008 Toyota Alphard Hybrid (E-FOUR). Here’s what’s happening:

The car usually starts fine and drives normally.

However, occasionally when switching from EV mode to engine mode, the engine fails to start.

Attempting to start again produces a high-pitched “wiiiiiing” noise, almost like a starter motor or magnetic clutch isn’t engaging.

No warning lights appear on the dashboard.

I suspect it might be related to the sprag clutch or starter/motor components, but I’m not certain.

If any hybrid transmission experts have encountered a similar issue or can offer guidance, your advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much in advance.

Initial engine start by turning the key uses the Hybrid motor in the gearbox. Subsequent engine starts uses the starter/generator driving the toothed serpentine belt on the front of the engine. Check the belt first, also the tensioner, water pump, aircon pump, idler pulley and crankshaft pulley which are all connected to the belt.
