Jackie298 Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 Hello everyone~! My name is Jackie. I plan to move to UK with my Vellfire. However, I am wondering the insurance problem and the repairing issues. Would anyone mind to give me some tips? Thanks My Vellfire is 2012, 2.4, White.
Rojie Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 Welcome to this Forum Jackie. Where are you living now ? Insurance should not be a problem. Shopping around may be desirable as some Insurers don't recognise Alphards and Vellfires as they were never officially imported to the UK. But, as more and more cars arrive, Insurers are becoming aware of their popularity. Some Toyota dealers are very huffy about imports and won't touch them. Others, such as my local outfit, will undertake most work. Toyota share many parts across various vehicle platforms, and parts can be imported from Japan or the UAE. Most 'service' parts are readily available. Toyota Direct will also source parts for you. Depending on where you live now, the situation may be much better in Wallingford. Lots of useful information is contained in the Forum, so you know where to look for assistance. Safe Journey 1
Jackie298 Posted October 16, 2021 Author Posted October 16, 2021 Hello Rojie, I am still in HK right now. And struggling should I ship my Vellfire with me as the shipping fee is quite high recently. Any Members here are living around Reading and Oxford can introduce some garages on repairing or doing maintenance on Vellfire?
Rojie Posted October 16, 2021 Posted October 16, 2021 Hi Jackie, Let me stress I am no expert on the following matters; but they are things to consider before you decide to bring your Vellfire. Due to the age of your Vellfire (less than 10 years) your import may attract taxes. You will need to register your vehicle here and get an MOT. I believe the MOT is required before you can register it. To get an MOT you will need to have rear fog lights fitted, if you don't have them already. There are companies that import cars directly to the UK (from Japan) that understand all the bureaucracy. Some only do it for cars they wish to sell on their own behalf. Others provide the service for their client. I need to do some more research to suggest companies you could make enquiries with. As this thread is in the Introductions section I will move it to a more suitable location within the Forum. 2

I don’t think it counts as an import if you’re bringing it here because you’re moving here. At least, if you’re taxed on the import it won’t be the same tax as you’d pay as if you were buying a car here from Japan (or HK). Normally when you relocate you declare what you own as you bring it into the new country, and you often don’t pay import tax on it. I think cars are included in this, at least up to a point. If you are moving because of work, see if your relocation agent can help. The UK government website will probably have good information too. If the car is less than 10 years old you’ll need an IVA test (£200 on entry) to make it roadworthy, and every car older than 3 years needs a MOT (£40) every year. You need a MOT to get insurance, you need insurance to drive it on a public road. There are companies at every port that will do MOTs for import vehicles, fit fog lights if needed etc. (if you don’t have rear fog lights you fail your MOT and Japanese cars don’t, not sure about HK)
Jackie298 Posted October 17, 2021 Author Posted October 17, 2021 Thanks~! I know i can apply the TOR1 in HMRC for tax free to shop my car. However, my car was made in Feb 2012. May I ship it in December 2021 from HK to UK? I think it takes around 2 months to UK. In this case, Do I need to do the IVA test? And I would like to know how much is the insurance for Vellfire 2.4 in UK in general?
Rojie Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 Hi Jackie, Insurance costs vary, obviously, depending on your situation. Most of the annual premiums I see on here are £270 to £300. Again you can search on this Forum for Insurance, as many members have disclosed their insurance company and annual cost.
Jackie298 Posted October 17, 2021 Author Posted October 17, 2021 Thanks! Rojie! Is that ok for my Vellfire does not have heated seats in UK?

I am not quite sure what you are asking. It is cooler here than in Honkers, but does not get cold enough that heated seats are essential. You can purchase aftermarket seat warmers, although I never have.

I believe that if the car is over 10 years then wont need IVA, only an MOT, only Fog light and possibly speedometer converted. I am sure there will be some kind of import tax, as you cpuld sell the car a month later, but i am not sure on what this would be. there are a few import specialists like Algys https://www.algysautos.com/import-scheme-import-any-car-into-the-uk-from-japan
Jackie298 Posted October 19, 2021 Author Posted October 19, 2021 Thanks everyone!!! I am wondering if it is easy to find a garage to do the maintenance with Vellfire. Because I do know nothing on fixing cars. Thanks
