2.4 owners, what's the best MPG you managed to get on motorways?

Recommended Posts

I've put about 12 miles on my 2.4 54 plate so far and have zero idea what MPG I'll get but I'm already trying to calculate fuel costs for longer trips I'm planning.

What's the average MPG you guys are getting with the 2.4l engine on the new regular or premium petrol?

With a 4 speed auto it should be (about) 9.4km / litre; according to the Owners Manual.

26.28mpg then I think, cheers. I wonder what it'll really get. Update to follow.

Just back from a trip down to Scottish Borders via M74 & M9 with some other minor A roads, well chuffed with 30 mpg.
Motorway miles at 60mph, back roads only allowed 40-50 and there were some steep hills from Moffat to Peebles.

Converted van with usual luggage for 4 day trip. E10 fuel.

I've not had my 2.4 very long and no idea what MPG it had been getting but the last tank it just did about 63 litres of E10 95ron in about 265 miles so did a rudimentary calculation.

If my maths is right works out about 19mpg 🤢

In fairness to it, alot of that was short A to B driving.  I know that driving it back from Birmingham down to the South Coast when I purchased it, despite sitting on the motorway for most of it at a reasonable lick it did well in excess of 300 miles and was quite impressed with it.  It's also rear converted with a pop top so there's additional weight and drag from that.

I had a Forester 2.0 XT before it that had mad thirst for 99ron, so this is nothing in comparison.  Glad it runs happily on E10 as that represents a bit of a saving!

I have to take it all back! Just been up north, about 670 mile round trip....managed about 28 on the way up, 27 on way home so 27.5mpg average.  I don't have the lightest right foot in the world either so I have no doubt 30 would have been possible.

Very impressed with it TBH, even loaded to the gills it doesn't drive much different to when empty and happily punts along the motorway at a decent pace.  Whilst my heart would always say V6, my head definitely concurs that the 2.4 is all the motor an Alphard needs!

As I have reported before, I am getting 35 -40 MPG with E10. Which I am pleased with. My 3 Estima's before I was getting 32 MPG on E10, they were'nt Hybrids. Doing the max speed on motorways and main dual carriage ways. I am impressed with what I get from my 2.4 Hybrid E4. I keep to the speed limits through the villages etc. I am 75% of the time on my own. I have the 3rd row of seats stowed away. I like the carry capacity of Alfie and still have the ability to carry 4 passengers in comfort plus myself.

The Hybrid comes into its own in slow moving traffic when one has edge forward. Looking at the screen showing where the power is coming from and its on the hybrid battery is pleasing and the hybrid battery charges up going down steep hills in a lower gear. Usually the engine kicks in silently at around 10mph, impressed.

I have a 2003 2.4L non-hybrid. I did full tank to low fuel warning test 377.8 miles using 12.53 gallons which is 30.1 mpg.

I would say 70% motorway but including some very steep hills in Shropshire and Mendips.

Heavy camper conversion.

I usually drive about 60mph on the motorway.

E10 fuel.

I'm well chuffed and frankly surprised.

I have pretty much the same rig as you. I also drive about 60 mph and in similar conditions I'm averaging about 27 mpg. I did get over 29 once. Fitting a cruise control made about 2 mpg difference.

We spent a month in Provence this summer (our first camping trip in our 2.4L petrol automatic).

We covered 3,200 km round trip, mostly 70mph on autoroutes with air conditioning On.

The Alphard managed 33.2 mpg average for the whole trip. I was surprised and very pleased.

Anyone got any figures on impact of having aircon running?

Presumably, you mean affect on MPG ?

Our Suzuki Vitara has instant fuel consumption read out, with aircon on it shows 2-3 mpg increase consumption.

Good to know.

What engine size does your Suzuki have ?

As it is the torque of the engine that is the measure of its ability to 'turn' a load 1 foot, the more torque the engine produces the less the affect the air con will have.

My guess is beyond a certain torque it will make no difference.

What is that figure ? No idea, and it will depend on many of the vehicles characteristics.

However, I would expect if you are running on Propane the air con will have quite an affect due to its much low efficiency.

It’s a 1600 petrol.

I thought it would be less. Thanks for letting us all know.

Had first real trip over weekend - filled up with 60litres (petrol light was on a for a bit) so no way I can get 70 litres as per handbook

got around 280 miles mostly on A roads and Motorway so how does that calculate in mph - 60 litres travelling 280 miles in distance?

Multiply litres by 0.22 to get imperial gallons, and divide the miles by that.

60 litres is 13.2 gallons, so you got about 21 mpg.

I agree with Richard, about 21mpg.

That 4 speed gearbox doesn't help matters.

9.7km/l is what the handbook says; so you are about right.

Thanks to forum I have just realised I have been driving around in 3rd gear (D3) not 4th (D)- so hope to see an improvement - and no I don't feel dumb 😉

Oopps !

It is easy done. I think the Alphie gear shift could be better in that regard !

The mistakes we learn by experience always have a positive payback
