I've been hearing about 10 year old vehicle and rule -> IVA check is needed if it is lesser than 10 year old. I have a question - is it 10 year from date of manufacture

or 10 year from date of registration in Japan

Β

Related question - the number plate we get in UK, is it decided by manufacture date or registration date in Japan 🎌. Thanks

Hi Teekay,

Β

Both these are very good questions.

I don't know the answer to either !

Β

Otherwise, I respectfully suggest, you phone the DVLA for the definitive answer.

Β

Good Luck.

I doubt anyone else will definitively know either !

The vehicle you are looking at is somewhat unique.

Β

To improve your chances, you may need to explain why you are asking the questions as the circumstances are unusual.

I realise the details are in another thread, but not everyone may read it.

Β

Β

Good Luck.

The vehicle I was looking at is not the case in point. Question is simple, general and applicable to all import. Looks like this forum need more members..only handful active ones reply. I'm don't mind calling dvla but tbh this is not an unusual query

Β

Doing online search, quote -Β You might not need approval for a vehicle that was first registered or manufactured more than 10 years ago.

Β

https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/getting-vehicle-approval

Β

I guess that's the answer.. I might look up dvla number and call them but some members must know this already I don't need to reinvent the wheel..

Hi Teekay,

Β

Our vehicle was registered by our campervan converter, who also imported the vehicle, so I've no direct experience of the import/registration process. However, I can respond to your related question - our reg plate reflects the date of first registration in Japan (taken from the Japanese Export Certificate), I can't see any separate date on the export certificate relating to (earlier) date of manufacture. The V5C records both date of first registration (i.e. in Japan) and date of first registration in the UK separately.

yeah, a lot of people now do not own computers/use regular forums.

I see a lot of posts on facebook, but that is a poor way to share information, I find most people join and ask the same questions, much easier to search a forum.

Hi Chris/Moderation group, apologies if already exists, if not, I would like to suggest Β creation of a compilation of the queries / answers / resources / FAQs, all into a shared spreadsheet or page. Usually a shared google spreadsheet with public link could work quite well. Or on an ongoing basis, important / interesting posts can be linked to a common landing page. Any thoughts?

Hi Teekay,

Β

I'll pass this onto Alphard Club.

Β

It sounds like a lot of work to me !

Are you volunteering ?

Β

There are a few examples on this Forum; the main ones being the Insurers; head units and fuse locations

It can be very difficult to keep current, e.g. as Insurance Companies are changing their policies (pun intended) frequently.

Β

One of the main issues, from my point of view, it that some members just start another thread rather than search the existing ones.

I know searching can be tedious, and unrewarding. Also, as is common with some search engines, if you aren't precise with the search, or previous threads had imprecise headings, the search will, effectively, fail !

Β

It could be a good approach.

Β

What do other members think.

Morning Rojie instead of one / few bearing the cross, community effort works best. It is not as hard as it looks. Example this can be freely edited by anyone and can be really good meeting ground -> https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rclJkgZ2UZnSORT2u7Csl8w3lS8IQdIt9cau8p16R48/edit?usp=sharing

Please try let's see if it worksΒ

Looks interesting.

Β

Where is the data storage ? How is it Moderated ?

Β

Although members would have write access, who would have delete access ?

Β

I still can anticipate a potential proliferation issue as the Q&A base expands.

Data is stored in Google cloud.

Β

To begin with it can be open to edit for all but access can be restricted as it evolves.

Β

If it becomes unwieldy we can lift and shift it to page in this forum and retain only the most useful information.

Β

This might not be a prefect way to capture information from the the word go but can really work great as a first step. But tbh this is only going to be as good as the contributing members. More often apathy and lack of use kills such initiative.

Hi all,

Β

I like the idea of an information/Q&A database, and perhaps a good way to ensure that searches are effective would be for our esteemed moderators to modify thread titles / extract info from threads, set a range of sub-headings etc. I believe this already happens but maybe, as Rojie indicates, this would result in a lot more work for moderators if it were to be extended. I think the wiki model was to allow some people editing rights, presumably based on their knowledge of the field, rather than open editorial access to all.

From what I've seen so far this forum is generally polite and there are few knowledge battles; but these can happen, folk can become tetchy/abusive and that's where the moderator's role is invaluable. So I like an actively moderated forum, as this one is.

A separate issue to possibly consider is that once you start using Google or the other big players, information about you (location, vehicle, search interests etc) becomes the data they're interested in - I've already spent time trying to de-google my phone, sourcing alternative apps that are free & open source, so I certainly wouldn't want to follow a forum into the googlesphere.... (only one voice though, others may feel differently...)

Very interesting.

I am glad you followed through on it.

In the case we discussed, it is very unusual for the gap to be so long.

Issue is date of manufacture is not on auction sheet. So I'm not sure how to find out.

Β

Also dvla want some BIMTA certificate - not sure what that involves. Might have to look up / call them.

Β

No it isn't !

So either the DVLA has access to a 'Japanese' database, or as the delay between manufacture and registration is normally quite short; maybe they just ignore the difference.

I don't know. Interesting.

Β

I assume you are importing your vehicle yourself ?

Β

You need advice from someone that has done it before.

Β

BIMTA, I believe, is a mileage certification. I don't know, but should, where they are created.

Hopefully someone on this Forum will help you

I have not decided on importing myself, in discussion someone.
One of my friend did import himself and he had positive experience.

Either way I'd like to know the procedure and don't mind spending time on this as it seems fun..that's how boring I am ☺️

Rather than posting it externally we can create an Common FAQ section, something i have been meaning to do for a while and is on my mind to do soon as well as guides section for questions just like this.
