This is my first post, so apologies if it is the wrong place.

 

I took my car to an in-car audio place. Whilst installing a new after market stereo, they went to test it and all of a sudden, the car won’t go into drive and won’t eject the key unless the battery is disconnected. it also won’t go all the way across into park, just like halfway where it would usually go.

 

it goes into reverse just not drive. Never had any suggestion of any issue before they started working on the stereo.

 

anyone have any suggestions?

It’s a 2005 Alphard, sorry I forget to include that.

Is the little black button still located where gear change is 

The shift lock? Yes it is.

I think they got something jamed in the gear linkage when the had the face off to do the radio 

So, I just had the AA guy out, he took took the console apart and it was exactly what you said it was (small bit of plastic from the air vent). Showed him this thread and he said you are a genius haha. Thanks for the help.

I had same thing in the boot lock.. tiny bit of plastic fell in to the lock and would not lock the boot.... luckily i saw it drop out when inspecting it.. 

Thankfully all sorted now. Good to know for the future.
