Anyone know.the reason for this, why it's there, light inside a small gap in the roof lining between the front seats.

 

 

I have one in my Mk1. I think someone commented on this in a previous thread. It is a useful light which keeps the cabin eliminated to a level which means you don't scrabble in the dark, but also won't be distracted by it. 

Some other brands call them mood lighting.

 

As Dan says, it just provides a dull illumination

It's a light that is non intrusive, and illuminates the centre console, useful when putting your coffee cup down in the holder, so you can see without switching on the map lights.
