Awning rail kit

Recommended Posts

how are you guys attaching an awning/ awning rail?

I have tried the magnetic and the suction ones and they just won't stay on. I have a pop top could that be the problem?

You need to get a rail fitted. The pop-top may prove a hindrance but it can be overcome. Search the forum for ‘awnings’ - there’s plenty of postings.

Hi Arthur

Thanks for getting back to me.  I was really wanting to avoid putting holes into the van or using a glue substance, but if that is the only way to get an awning to stay put I will have to do it.

Thanks for your help 👍 I will search awnings on here 😀

I got a rail fitted and I have a pop up.  I went to a local conversion company to get it fitted.  It is brilliant.  Just still practicing reattaching the awning when I go out for the day!  I have a smallish awning Vango Kela V airbeam.

Hi Syl.  I note that you’re in Wigan (I’m on the Wirral).  H L Campers in Liverpool glued a rail to my pop-top campervan for less than £100 and I’m sure they’d be happy to advise you on your options.  They do a lot of work with Gaz Tech who are Alphard specialists based in Warrington.

Hi Arthur,

Is it a good job and strong? What awning do you have on it?

Hiya Clare,

Can I ask what the cost was please, can you open and vote the door okay and is it glued or screwed on?

£195 and I think it is screwed on but not sure.  I can open and close the door, but using a grey plumber tube thing over the door to help protect the awning, it has taken a bit of trial and error to work out pitching the awning.  I have been told you can also use a tennis ball on the edge of the door.  They angled the rail to point up to help with the low clearance over the door.  I tried the magnetic attachment but it failed which I why I paid the extra.  I have also since had the electric hook up moved from under the back of the vehicle to under the bonnet, no more lying on the floor in the rain!!!

Hi Syl.  The glued awning rail hasn’t moved since it was fitted last year. We’ve had the awning up 17 nights this year in all sorts of weather and it’s never given any cause for concern.  We use a Vango Airbeam Faros II and it fits well.  Haven’t experienced any problems with the sliding door rubbing against the awning roof either.  Just about mastered re-connecting the awning after we’ve done ‘driveaway’ exploring.

Sounds perfect.  I will give them a call.  Thanks 👍 😊

Hi Sylvia

If you click on the search button, top right of the home page, click on the down arrow and select members from list. Type in Gazza and search.

click on the Gazza icon and you'll see the postings for the roof rail and canopy fixings.

Basically I have used tool magnets from Lidl which slot on the top of the camper and keep the awning in place. I generally use three, I find this is plenty.

They are super strong and will withstand very strong winds!

They're also relatively cheap, just a couple of pounds each. I noticed our local Lidl store have them in now.

Just be careful not to get your fingers trapped in them, it hurts like hell!

Let me know if this helps or you need more information, pictures etc.

Thanks 👍

We use a magnetic strip that attaches to the awning plus a couple of guy ropes over the van to securely hold it. It means no modifications are necessary to the bodywork.

Hiya Gazza

Is yours a pop top? Do you get enough clearance to allow the door to open and close?

Hi

Yes, mine is a pop top roof. I find the magnetic bars fit neatly. See photos showing just two bars in place.

Eh, how do you connect your awning to them? Will they not scratch the roof?

No they don't scratch the roof. I usually slide them through a loop which my wife has seen on the edge of the awning, or in most cases I just place them on the top of the leading edge of the awning. You can't budge them once they're on. They take some lifting off, so the canopy is very secure.

I know it's not a perfect solution but it's cheap and if you can work with them, you'll adapt them to suit your needs.

One good thing is that you. Can remove them and drive away in less than a minute, which is great.

Thanks for your support and advice

No problems.

For £10.00 it's well worth trying.

I've had all kinds of strips and awning connectors, but this idea just seems to work better and can withstand harsh weather. Living in the Lake District, we need tough engineering solutions to keep out the weather.

😂😂

Do you only put 2 magnets on?
