Phil Tivney Posted March 25, 2024 Posted March 25, 2024 Hi. I have a 2009 Vellfire 2.4 with a cvt transmission; could I tow a 4 berth caravan with it? Would it need a gearbox oil cooler fitted? Thanks.
fiaraz Posted November 14, 2024 Posted November 14, 2024 I am currently looking at doing this. BUt from what i have read you need th ecooler installed, did you manage to get anywhere with this?
Elmer Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Any update on the above please ? I have a 4 berth caravan laden weight 1350 and am changing my freelander 2 and have been looking at the 2.4l alphard a lot .
Phil Tivney Posted January 29 Author Posted January 29 I now tow a 4-berth Lunar Venus caravan, with a laden weight of just under 1400kg, and the Vellfire 2.4 seems to tow it very well, without a gearbox oil cooler. I wouldn't want to tow anything heavier with it though. Hope this helps

Alphard Club Posted February 11 Posted February 11 The heat in the transmission comes from driving in the overdrive gears where the torque converter is not locked in. When towing with an automatic you need to select something like 4th gear or S and do not let the vehicle go in to 5th or higher. avoid the top cruising gears, these are weak gears and do not use the torque converter to assist. some autos have 6 or even 8 gears and need to find the non-overdrive gears and stick to it which helps fuel economy (believe it or not) and prevent heat in the transmission where it cooks the oil. You will be suprised how quickly it will heat up on fats roads going uphill when using the wrong gear.
Alphard Club Posted February 11 Posted February 11 I know this is for landcruiser but same principle for all automatics. 1
