pipsyp Posted April 11 Posted April 11 So.....had the misfortune of breaking the passenger mirror glass on the Alphard. Thankfully the mirror housing and folding mechanism itself is fine, just the glass dropped off the plate and wasn't salvageable! Anyway, trying to drive a vehicle the scale of the Alphard without a passenger mirror is no fun so I quickly looked into sorting it. As bad luck would have it (unless I was being daft) whilst there seems to be a proliferation of AH20 glass on the likes of eBay, but not AH10 which was frustrating. I did pop down to Halfords and they didn't have anything either, though their booklet seemed to suggest a part that could be ordered in. That glass it transpires is actually for a later model (2000 to 2006) Previa/Estima, and not for the Alphard specifically. I tried one of these cut to size temp mirrors from Amazon, absolute garbage and regret even trying. Definitely don't use one of those. Off the back of the Previa/Estima thing, I ended up taking a chance on some Previa glass from Amazon, which turned up next day and wasn't a great deal more expensive than the temp solution . Needless to say it's not a perfect fit, but it's the right shape to go into the backplate without any 'oversize' issues and can be mounted so that the loss of mirror area is minimal. So, if you are ever in need of mirror glass, need something temporarily/are happy to live with something that's not perfectly shaped I can confirm the 2000-2006 Previa/Estima glass is usable and a good solution - assuming you still have the mirror backplate (i.e. have only lost the glass!). I've ordered a new genuine replacement from Amayama, at rather extortionate cost, and I guess it will arrive eventually, but there is a temporary/permanent solution there if needed if anyone finds themselves in the same boat. I also learnt something very useful in the process.....transpires my MOT had lapsed somehow over the bank holiday weekend (no reminders unfortunately) so it also needed MOTing, which I thought ironically was just great given the mirror problem. However, transpires (and this is quite a recent change) that as long as the vehicle was first used/registered (whatever) before January 2010, you can pass an MOT without even an advisory with just the drivers and interior rear view mirror, the passenger mirror is still not required (believe it used to be anything after 1976 was covered but not anymore). Therefore, the passenger mirror for us lucky AH10 owners is just for vanity, just make sure you don't break your driver's mirror around MOT time! 3 1

pipsyp Posted April 12 Author Posted April 12 Sorry all, one other really useful point of note is this Amazon product, as long as you are a prime member is that amount all in, including Royal Mail tracked 24 shipping. So whilst Amazon suggest you'll get it in a couple of days, as the order is actually shipped by the reseller and not Amazon, likelihood is it'll turn up next business day (did for me).

pipsyp Posted April 24 Author Posted April 24 (edited) Urggghh....the trials and tribulations of owning an Alphard...... Having waited a few weeks for the replacement mirror glass to arrive, so it does, to usual Japanese perfection......however.......god damn its the wrong shape glass 😭 The irony is whilst it's genuine glass, blue tint and with the blind spot as per the original, and also listed as the correct part for an AH10 Alphard, it's the same shape as the temporary (Estima) glass I bought! Further investigation has determined there are c. 4 different mirror glasses for these cars, so can only assume it's one of the others and that some of these vehicles must have the same door mirror units as the Estima (but not mine!). Mine are also definitely genuine mirror units and not aftermarket ones like some have. I've reached out to Amayama to look into sourcing the correct one (benefit of hindsight, I've provided my VIN this time and will let them tell me the part code) and going to see where this goes. No doubt however I'll be sending this one back to Osaka (unless someone wants a genuine, non heated LH mirror glass for a 2000-2006 Estima by any chance!) Edited April 24 by pipsyp

They verified my car through its reg and frame number and came up with a part number that differed to the one I got from Amayama. It was expensive by comparison (nearly twice the cost for the same thing vs going through Amayama) but as I am now selling the van I thought what the hell and bit the bullet for the much quicker turnaround.....its since turned up and despite the part no difference it's basically identical to the one I got first off! Being a special order I'm now probably stuck with it too! Honestly, how hard does it have to be to get a genuine mirror glass for an Alphard!!! 😆

Toyota/Alphard/epc.com is a good place, or there is a part finder in the Forum. Ordering from Toyota Direct you will need the correct part number first; they won't find a JDM part number for you ! Some members are very lucky, as I am, as their local official Toyota Dealer will find the part number for you and order it. Slightly more costly than from Toyota Direct, but far less risky.

Hi Roger, From EPC. I got it wrong the first time (that was on me as the part was for a Pre FL) but 2nd time both Amayama and the Toyota dealer confirmed the part no. My mate has sourced numerous parts for it for me from the Toyota dealer he uses (radiator, some suspension bits) from them before with no issue so think this is a bit of a one off. My working theory is that the bag has the right part number on it, but the wrong part in it (it wasn't sticky sealed and had been stapled shut so looks like its been open previously). The glass is quite functional so it's not absolutely the end of the world, just potentially annoying if im stuck with the two (as the one through the dealers was special order and potentially non returnable). pipsyp Posted June 8 Author Posted June 8 (edited) The dealer are arranging for the part to be reshipped, so fingers crossed the right item will be in the bag this time! I inspected the part that arrived further compared to the one I sourced from Japan and it is literally identical, even the markings and number references on the rear so the part they provided is definitely wrong (the Pre FL mirror). They've provided a replacement, same part number but it's right this time. I can only assume someone has picked the wrong part and packaged it with the wrong part no, that parts now doing the rounds of Toyota UKs parts inventory, and I was just properly unlucky to have received it lol. Glad it got sorted as the blurry thing has cost me £133.03+VAT, all so I didn't have to wait quite so long! For anyone wanting to know I believe the part nos are as follows: Pre FL LH Mirror glass (non heated) 87961-58011 Pre FL RH Mirror glass (non heated) 87931-58011 FL LH Mirror glass (non heated) 87961-58030 FL RH Mirror glass (non-heated) 87931-58030 And just buy them from Amayama. They are less than 80 quid with postage to the UK. Now if you have power seats/heated seats there's a strong likelihood you also have heated mirrors. It's not a common fixture on these unless you happen to have a very top spec van. In that instance the part no will be different (as I think the heated glass versions are also hydrophobic coated) and will need verifying by using the Toyota EPC website (I found Google Lens useful for translation). I am not aware of any switching for the heated mirrors, but maybe that function is automatic; I don't have the Cold Climate option either. The mirrors do seem to be self cleaning which would suggest the hydrophobic coating. I feel sure this is covered in the JPNZ Owners Manual. I need to read it again. To be honest, my van seems to have virtually all the OEM bells and whistled and, I confess, I don't play with any of them. I also was lucky to get quite a few non-OEM toys; particularly useful is a extra centre console between the front seats; all in matching 'wood' trim. It is extremely useful for DVDs and CDs, yes I am that old, but does prevent easy access to the rear conversion from the front seats without leaving the van which would be rather useful in the rain. Most new owners discover many features that they were unaware they had ! What fun. 1

Hi Roger, Believe the heated mirrors would work with the rear screen, perhaps give it a go on a colder morning and see if they clear. You can tell if you remove the glass it will have a wired connection to it and a metal heating grid between the glass and frame. If you're curious they are not difficult to remove, they have retaining clips at the top which hinge into place and clips at the bottom to keep it in place. Push the mirror completely inwards at the top so you can pull it out from the bottom. To put them back in it's the reverse (push the mirror plate completely down first). Given the prices of the things though completely understand if you didn't care to find out lol Cheers Paul

It is only when I think about these things I realise what toys I have ! I have electrically adjustable mirrors with fold (which I don't use), turn signal repeaters in both wing mirrors; lane assist sensors and a puddle lights, so there will be plenty of wiring in those pods ! Many years ago I learned to kerb my inquisitiveness, I played with the gearbox on my only car; disaster ensued. What a silly boy I was. What did I learn ? It is normally easier to dismantle than re assemble. One of my life's costly and harsh lessons during my youthful years. 1

I have a rear conversion so the tailgate curtains are always closed (even when driving) just to thwart the peekers ! I doubt I have ever turned on the rear screen heater ! But, I will this coming winter.
