Catastrophic engine failure - is engine worth replacing?

Recommended Posts

Just got home with RAC... engine went in fast lane of motorway.  I love my Alphard so much, I am now in bits.  I don't know whether trying to find a new engine and a mechanic to fit it (plus towing it to garage) is really worth it or if I should try to find a slightly lower mileage one in auto trader (perhaps with lpg to save on fuel) for around £5K - would much appreciate genuine advice?  Any costings on replacing engine or where to source... any vital warnings or things to avoid/look out for?  I am still in shock tbh...

I attach a pic of the underside of engine after the event happened.😢

Hello Chris,

So sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Should you decide to replace your engine Picasso can, almost certainly advise you on a mechanic that can remove and replace the engine.

Quite close to you too.

Perhaps he can  even suggest where to search for  a replacement.

What, exactly, is the issue with your current engine?

I can't see from the photo ?

Picasso?

Yes , Picasso, actually Lee.

Search the Leadership section, or membership section, and click on the blue  initial 'button'.

Send him a personal message.

Is it the sump pan, or a main housing.

Presumably the engine dumped all its oil when this happened !

Did the engine seize ?

Hi - I can see you are in Leamington. I am in Coventry and always use Gibbs Automotive on London Rd (now easily identifiable by the many Elgrands for sale in the forecourt). The chap there has a 2.4 Alphie himself and knows the cars inside out so if he cannot help, no-one can. He just fitted a new radiator and temp gauge for me after mine blew - not as big a job I know but...) Hope that helps.

Edit - there is of course Automotive Japanese Spares in Tile Hill for parts. Not sure they would carry an engine, but if you go in there they can normally help with sourcing things.
