Sticky dash fix

Decided to get off my back side and go sort out my sticky dash. Had a kit from the Ozzy company that sells the fix for a while, ordered some of the foam brushes seen in the demo video from Amazon for £3, and some grey sugru to fix a few dinks. Think the kit was about £40 delivered.

 

My dash is only really sticky down near the windscreen and then there is discoloration above the head unit where the jap owner must have had something stuck to the dash, so not too bad but shiny enough to warrant a dash mat to prevent reflection.

 

I have so far used the initial cleaning fluid, I did a full pass of the whole dash, then another pass over the more sticky area, it's pretty good and with a universal blue cloth from the supermarket it did remove all the stuff stuck to the dash, I would suggest I probably have enough to do it all again which I may well do before I apply the top layer.

 

Currently I have the sugru drying (overnight) where I have filled some scratches and dinks.

 

So tomorrow il probably clean the whole dash again, mask up and apply the top coat.

Finished the job today, super easy and the results are excellent 👌 

 

I gave the whole dash another once over with the cleaning spray, this dealt with the very bottom of the dash being slightly tacky still.

 

Then I dove straight in with the top coat. Initial brown trousers as the top coat is MUCH darker when it goes on, but thankfully it dries almost to a perfect colour match to the OEM grey.

 

It covered my light grey sugru repairs with 2 coats, and over the corse of the day I went back and gave the whole thing a Second pass and used a small paint brush (water colour brush) to get right into the corners and deal with the edges. I have a very steady hand so you might want to mask up but I couldn't be bothered.

 

It looks absolutely perfect, back to a Matt finish and a uniform colour everywhere. If you are tempted and have a sticky dash I can't recommend this gear enough it's very simple and the results are super. 

 

Il give it a few days and possibly may give it another once over with the top coat.

Sugru is a universal putty for fixing stuff, if you Google it it's available on Amazon.

 

It's a bit like blue tac but when it dries it's a kind of rubbery plastic, ideal for fixing dashboards.

 

I have used it for all sorts over the years.

I have this job to do, but haven’t had the time yet.  I have the the same ‘sticky dash fit’ product from Oz, but have been a little apprehensive in using it yet.  Your post does however fill me with hope.  A couple of questions if I may: -

— how did you use the cleaning spray and how did it leave the surface?  I’ve previously tried to clean off the sticky stuff before I knew what I was doing with normal cleaner, and don’t want to create more mess.

- when you applied the finishing coat did you paint down front of the console plastic - the area that connects with the clove box

- I have fine single line cracks in some areas does the Sugru work for those, or just big holes.

 

Any advise will be gratefully received.

So the spray I found applying liberally and leaving it for a few mins to penetrate worked quite well. My dash really was only sticky down near the screen, I would say one pass over most of the dash was enough, the actual sticky bit I did several times and still have quite a bit left.

 

The finishing coat I did everywhere, I got some of the foam brushes the company use in the demo videos off Amazon for very little money and then also had a very small watercolour brush to do the detail areas. I have only done one pass so far and it was quite cold when I did it, now a few months later it definitely needs doing again as there is some areas that can be seen not quite be an even tone. Again though I have loads left to do it again so when the weather warms up do it again and possibly a third time to get it perfect.

 

Regards sugru, you can use it for deep scratches, I had a few dents that I completely covered and used vinyl I had to apply the leather like pattern. As an aside the dash paint in the kit covers the sugru completely but it takes an extra coat so I would suggest giving the sugru areas an initial pass with the paint, let it dry then do the whole dash.

 

I was a bit like you dude, I didn't want to start it and make my dash worse, but that 100% is not the case it was very simple and the results are great.

@NorthBoy just take your time, get the correct brushes and some decent quality rags to wipe the spray off.

 

I didn't mask anything off by the way but I do have a very steady hand (art degree finally paid off 😂) but you might want to mask up if your aren't confident, see how you get on and good luck!

You can buy dash mats to stop the dash becoming sticky.

 

But too late if it is already sticky.

 I bought this one. Its looks like real leather and fits perfect. Just make sure it does not slip over the daylight sensor. The quality and fit is great and the price of it is amazing.

I had a dash mat before, hated it, looks rubbish in my opinion and as you say constantly slipping about and covering the sensor.

 

Much prefer the dash top looking as it should

Does not slip over sensor or move around, and that's without Velcro or other fastening.

 

Prevents reflected summer glare really well.

You are right but when you put it in you have to make sure the holes dont cover the sensor is what I meant. It took me a while to figure out why my lights was on in the day, especially as I had just done electrics lol. The only problem I had was in strong winds with both doors open, but thats to be expected with a the wind flowing through
