Engine Mounts

Featured Replies

Hi All

Having just had my car in for a gearbox service, I have been told that one of my engine mounts has broken. Does anybody know if this is a job that can be done at home and if so how hard is it

Short answer: yes, many engine mounts can be replaced at home, but difficulty varies a lot by make and model. If the mount is easily accessible you can do it with a good socket set, a jack and a block of wood to support the engine, and a torque wrench.

If it’s tucked under the inlet manifold or needs the gearbox to be shifted, it gets trickier and may need an engine support bar or hoist and more disassembly. Practical tips: safely support the engine before removing the mount (use an engine support bar or a jack with a wood pad under the oil pan or gearbox — do not rely on a single jack without stands). Spray bolts with penetrating oil first. Note torque settings and any alignment dowels; use new bolts if the old ones are damaged.

Expect a few hours for a competent DIYers parts usually cost from about £20 to over £100 depending on the part and car.

If you’re uncomfortable with supporting the engine, or if access requires removing major components, get a garage to sort for you.
