  1. Hi,

I'm importing a Vellfire, and I've been discussing insurance with companies, believing I need to insure it on the VIN/chassis number, until it's registered.

I've even spoken to Jap Cover/Mark Richards, and they don't insure on VIN either, due to the rule stating that insurance has to go on the police database within a week of it being taken out.

So basically the way the import is working is: It comes into port addressed for care of import agency, I pay import agency, and a local garage comes and takes it away for MOT etc.

I'm currently under the impression the garage will allow me to pay a storage fee, and they'll sort out the registration for me.

I think this means I don't have to insure the car until it's registered, as it won't be going anywhere except for to the garage.

Does anybody have any insight into the process. or insuring the car?

    Thanks

You can buy any double din unit, all will need a custom harness. Some head units are supplied with a harness to fit.

There are other makes of Android head units, Eonon is on the cheaper end and lack a bit of functionality. I have one and not the best I have had. My first one packed in and took out the alternator. The second one has some funny way, like bluetooth dropping out quite a lot, sometimes for a long time. You can't easily switch between phones, you have to actually turn off bluetooth on one phone to disconnect it. Its annoying that it opens up on any app you have used on your last trip, so if you happen to go on play store or file manager, you end up with that open on the next trip. You have to manually close apps. It also needs to be reset often. Ive had better from AliExpress for half the price.

If you go for Android, you can get a wiring harness off AliExpress

Thanks, it's more that from what I'd understood the wires behind the navi unit aren't the same as most 20 series alphards so there aren't any plug and play harnesses.

I don't know if I've misunderstood or if that's correct, but I'm hoping it's not a case of having to determine which wire is which, and then wire the matching pairs together.

Are you planning on driving an unregistered vehicle on the road?

    Don't.

You will need an MOT at least to get the van registered, and you must have Insurance before you drive it.

Some insurers will not meet a claim if the vehicle does not have a valid MOT.

No, that's not what I'm saying, that would be illegal. I'm saying that as an import I can't insure with a registration until the car gets the registration, but I also have to insure it as soon as it lands, so I'll have to insure it temporarily on the vin number alone, while the import garage sorts out all my paperwork etc.

Have you tried Mark Richards (Jap Cover) ?

It will be a case of shopping around.

Also, add a second driver like a spouse or sibling who has full licence and access to another car. I have seen massive drops in price by adding another driver.

I spoke to them this morning, and got a rough quote I'm happy with. I didn't think of it but I'm guessing they'll insure based on vin number until it has a proper uk reg.
