When you switch on your car, the Japanese lady should greet you, and a Toyota logo, and Japanese characters, appear on the screen.

Depending on your head unit, the open button is lower left hand side at the bottom.

Pressing it should open the screen so as to look like a small tray, which it ISN'T, and the CD slot should be across the top of the facia behind the screen, and a MD unit too.

As far as I can see from my JPNZ manual is that all (original) head units have a CD player.

I don't see any that resemble a 'keyboard'.

With the menu system (of my unit) there are many screens which look like keyboards, because they are.

Without wishing to worry you, I wonder whether your unit may be 'stuck' on a menu screen.

It also sounds like you may be a candidate for an upgrade to an 'English' unit.

Can you upload a photo of the head unit ?

Nothing greets us. It just sits there :) Yes I will post a photo...

I have pressed the 'open' button over and over but nothing happens. The only ones that work are the 'English' button which changes the numbers and alphabet on this same screen to English, and I am told the writing that appears at the top is saying 'what is your pet's name?'

It was a washout. We tried to order 3 stereos.  All 3 turned out to be out of stock. Had to get a refund on one that they accidentally sent to Durham instead of Dereham - they will only get inter store stuff from within 5 miles....then we found one that was in stock. The guy didn't even touch it, just said he couldn't source the cabling. Tried a Toyota Dealer, they could only source aN HDD the same as they one we have for £1500....it seems hopeless.

Got this from Toyota UK. Fat lot of use.

Hello Jennifer,

Thank you for your email regarding your Toyota Alphard.

I am afraid we are unable to advise on imported vehicles as we do not offer support for vehicles sold outside of the UK market.

I would advise contacting the Customer Relations for the Toyota Market for your Toyota Alphard.

Thank you for contacting us at Toyota.

Kind regards,

Trying Japan and New Zealand.

Oh dear, oh dear !

Try Malaysia too. Alphards were quite popular there.

Jenny, you don't have the HDD unit. Either you, or I, or both, are becoming confused !

In summary, we think your head unit is password locked !

Did you speak, or contact, those persons who claim to be able to unlock these for free, or for a small fee ?

There is a chap on ebay, who I have read good reports about, who is able to 'tinker' with Alphard head units.

He is located in Birmingham

Search ebay for beanbean280r. Hopefully he will be able to help you. (He is not cheap).

There are many Forum members who have upgraded their head units in various ways.

So, don't lose heart' the solution is in here somewhere !

I still have my original HDD unit, so cannot recommend specifically which way to go.

I've always been confused! The reason we're now saying HDD is because we found the manual for it tucked away in an unnoticed storage nook. Great idea about Malaysia thank you. I will also look up the chap you mentioned in Birmingham although it's a long way!

the guy in birmingham (ben) is great!

You can find him on facebook too @benhau

He might be able to actually change your whole headunit into an apple car play or android headunit, without changing the headunit. He can only do particular headunits... but i think he can do most japanese ones

Good Luck

That's right it was an experimental option from 2006 in Alphards and Estimas.

It's called an HDD Navigational System with the letters NHZN-W57

Sadly ebay no longer has a 'find member' facility I don't think. I can't find one anyway.

Sorry I misled you. I did not realise there was another HDD unit; other than the one I have.

Somewhere, I found a video of a gut unlocking a head unit.

Now I know which unit you have, I'll have another look.

Hi Jenny,

I have been looking at youtube and there are several videos that purport to unlock your particular HDD head unit.

Some involve a small payment.

Unfortunately, none of them (so far) has a procedure that starts with the screen you have.

Actually one does, but as soon as the buttons are touched it busts into life and he shows how to unlock it.

Please confirm, whatever you do, the screen is stuck in the keyboard ?

Have you tried disconnecting your battery.

Please note if you do you will probably need to reset windows (a the sun roof if you have one).

As it seems totally unresponsive I wonder if it is faulty, rather than not knowing how to unlock it.

I'll keep looking for a solution.

DON'T disconnect your battery.

I am just reading this may be what created the problem.

Hello Jenny,

Possibly some good news.

I have been searching virtually all afternoon for an English manual for your NHZN-W57, without success.

However, I have also contacted someone in Bangadesh requesting if he can still overcome locked units.

He has now responded confirming he can.

He has requested $20 usd and some photos of the unit.

I realise this could be a scam, but I don't think so. I have approached him, not vice versa.

If it were me, depending on how the payment is made, I would risk it.

I can't see any risk in sending him a photo, or two.

I wrote to him as a Moderator of this Forum and he is offering the service for $10 usd if I include a link to him.

I cannot see why I shouldn't, furthermore, if you were not successful I might publish that also on the Forum.

Is it OK for me to contact him on your behalf, or would you prefer to do that, or would you prefer to take no action at all.

If you wish to proceed, I'll contact you privately.

Sounds worth a shot. Thank you for your time! It would be good to find out if these people are for real.

The only problem we have, and the reason why I didn't try one of these people before is that although everyone seems to think the radio's locked because the battery was disconnected or something (although the dealer says no) the unit keeps asking me what is my pet's name. So is it not working because it's locked with a manufacturer's password or the owner's password? I other words this guy might be genuine but it still might not work, unless manufacturer's password overrides personal password?

I have given this a lot of thought. All the videos I have seen show the buttons on the unit (not the screen) as functional.

As I understand it, yours are not. It seems that locked units do offer some responses, whereas yours doesn't !

Does the unit allow you to tyre a password, albeit incorrect.

If so, that would suggest the unit is not faulty (another concern of mine) just performing its anti theft function.

What did the dealer say when you bought the vehicle ?

Did he explain the HDD was not functional ?

Is the dealer able to replace it with a functioning unit ? I assume you have explored that line of enquiry.

I sent him a photo of your unit.

I'll get in touch with him again.
