Technically, of course, you should be using the foot brake on inclines, but most autos will hold you still unless a steep gradient. Hitting the main brake instead of the non existent clutch pedal can create lots of 'excitement' for those following you ! These reactions are deeply embedded in our subliminal driving techniques and can be very difficult to overcome.
