Thanks Mike can you please share link to e5 e10 compare link? This is 5 gear machine? Have you tried premium fuel? Might be interesting

Iots of M5/M4/M25 with lots of current roadworks reducing speeds to 60 or less, i just stick cruise on and occasionally have to drop it to 40mph

Chris, I too personally love cruising at 55-58 mph than going 70. I understand Japanese speed limit is around 55 ish and engines are optimised to give best economy too at that speed. Win win.

279 km(173mls) used almost exactly half a tank of e5 so just over £50.

I expected worse to be honest and had a slow puncture which might have made it a bit less efficient.

E5 E10 have 5 & 10 percent ethanol respectively AFAIK.

 

is E5 is 99 octane fuel? I understand E10 regular fuel is 95 octane.

Shell v-power is 99 octane. Don't know if it has ethanol mixed in it. Anyone?

E5 is permitted to contain up to 5 per cent ethanol.

 

Most refineries in the UK do not add ethanol to E5.

 

West country E5 does contain ethanol.

 

If interested read up on the Shell, Esso (Exxon) and BP websites.

 

I think E5 can be as low as 97 Octane.

As other members have said, the way to economy is 60mph.

Unless doing vast distances, and France is a large country, extra journey time is significantly compensated for by increased economy.

Especially for us pensioners !

I don't mind saying here. It is nothing personal or rude.

 

Basically in short AFAIK all ethanol diluted fuels are not best for engine economy or ecology. I hope premium fuel continues to be available. Hope that makes sense. It's already proven above about mpg. I had used e10 and had bad experience.

Well economy is a question of price for 100km (or for 60 miles in your case). And fuel price is a question of taxes.
Ecology is another problem. E85 is emitting way less co² than any other fuel, but is emitting a bit more HC than regular (but it's still nothing compared to diesel).

BTW, E85 is very interesting for racing thanks to his burning temperature and his knock resistance.

Forgive me, but what is E85, 85 Octane ?

 

If E85 is what I think it is, 85 per cent ethanol, my guess is unless you have a drag racer, you have no need for it.

It's 85% ethanol. (In reality, it's more like 85% ethanol in summer and 65% ethanol in winter, with inter-seasons adjusting levels).
And with E85 you are around 100-106 Octane.

 

Beside I'm a drifter (so pretty great to cool the turbo engine), E85 is way cheaper than any other fuel here. It's something like 50% or a bit more cheaper than regular.

You have a 5 speed auto; so I doubt you ever get into 5th gear !
