david Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 Hello All, Sure this will have been covered before but can't find it. I was fitting a band expander to my 2002 Alphard radio (which works just fine now) but of course I dropped the shift lock button into the bowels of the centre console. Any videos online or any tips on how the heck I can get at it? The console seems pretty bullet proof. Cheers, Dave.
Geralt Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 On the assumption that's it's fallen to the floor, you could try to pull out the carpet from underneath the console. This might leave you a gap to fish it out.
dezufo Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 Undo the 2 screws at the bottom of the right hand side panel, pull out the carpet and use a flat ruler or wire coat hanger plus a torch, if your lucky you will be able to get it, if you have to remove the console again put some tape on the button to stop it falling out

If you take out the bottom drawer by sqeezing both sides to enable the door to drop fully down, the drawer can be removed by pulling outwards. You will then be able to locate screws holding the trim together with the centre consol, the same on the drivers side. There are two push in locator plugs one per side that need to be prized out use a plastic trim tool if pos you should now be able to pull the consol out the button normally lands on carpet?.I have found the best way to assemble the shift lock is to remove the panel that has the gear selector from the main panel, this can be done by carefully prizing 4 clips and carefully removing take your time so not to break tabs. Refit the main consol without the the shift lock panel then with the lock button in place snap the back. In place. The best advice I can give is take your time!! Hope this is of help Mike

Clutha Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 Mine is awol! As purchased recently. Time for a stupid question. I looked on eBay hoping to see what it was like, pics show a plastic item with no electrical connections, so…. What exactly does it do & what are the consequences of it not being available?
atlanticcobra2023 Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 (edited) It does a lock on the gear selector so that you cant move the gear selector. I.E. When first get in and start up with Gear selector in "P" if your shift lock is on then you have to put your foot on brake pedal to allow you to change gear. If its not engaged then you can select gears freely. It does not have electrical connections to the button but the bottom presses on a lever under the bezel skin near the gear selector to put shift lock on or off. Shift Lock = (Gear shift on or off) hope this helps Edited April 6, 2023 by atlanticcobra2023 1

Clutha Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 Thanks, I don’t have any problem moving out of P, but from previous auto boxes (Mazda Bongo) I’m operating brake pedal.

Yeah if you are using brake pedal to allow you to change from "p" to any other to start with then the shift lock will be on and you release it when first pressing brake after that you can select all gears no issues until you stop and remove key. when you go to start again press brake all good

Lets pretend your battery is dead and you need to move it. In P try to move your gear stick to neutral, you cant. push the shift lock button down and try to move to neutral. EUREAKA 😁 sorry for initial confusion
pipsyp Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 Sorry guys bit of a thread revival! Noticed on my 2008 AH10 2.4 that I'm able to go through the auto gear gate from P to L with the ignition key out. I only noticed the other day as I managed to go from P to R without engaging the brake which I found most strange. I have a suspicion that my shift interlock may have failed in the past and has been removed? Can only assume this perhaps was done/happened to it prior to import? I have the shift lock button but functionally it of course does nothing, as it never locks into park. Doesn't overly bother me as functionally the car is fine, but intrigued never the less!

It could be that the lever the button presses on has locked in position, or the bottom of the button is not touching the lever properly and the last time it did it was switched to switch lock off. With them being plastic it could have also broken at the bottom.
pipsyp Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Appreciate the reply @atlanticcobra2023 not sure what's going on. I don't hear any clicking when pressing the brake pedal but as you say if the shift lock is stuck open could explain it. Not a biggy as it functions just fine....and I suppose I'll probably never have the issue of it getting stuck in P 😆

Kevin Knibbs Posted July 15, 2023 Posted July 15, 2023 Hi, Going back slightly, i have dropped the shift lock button into the abyss, i have followed some steps, removing the two press plugs, removed the bottom draw and found a screw there. Found another screw on the right and also another behind the lower glove box. Still can't remove the cover. Have i missed anything? Regards Kevin

spikey_mern Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 I too have made the same unfortunate mistake and sent it to the abys in mine as well 🤣 mines a 2.4 anh10, tried removing screws and plugs same as Kevin but not budging. Thanks Hi Martin, i don't believe the hybrid is the same as ours, i think that once the three screws are removed and the two push plugs, it appears that there are straight plastic pins, on the left hand side of the cowl but i, like you cannot move the cover. At present i am stumped, maybe the carpet has to be removed??
spikey_mern Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 (edited) So, I have placed an order to buy some replacements via amayama. Seeing as the postage from Japan is quite expensive, I figured I'd help a few people out in the process (as there don't seem to be any in stock on eBay at the moment), so I've ordered 10 shift lock knobs. They were a couple of quid each plus £18 odd for postage 🤪 plus it says I'll have to pay some customs charge on UK entry. Hopefully tho it'll work out similar to the £6 ish someone said they'd seen them before on eBay for, if anyone would like one? I'll let people know when I've got them and we can sort out postage etc Edited July 20, 2023 by spikey_mern
