Hello everyone,

Im thinking of purchasing a 2012 or 2013 Toyota 2.4 Hybrid (undecided yet) next week. This is because i was told that on the newer models, due to the design and the newer hybrid drive, that these would get on average 45mpg compared to the older models?

I was also considering saving some money and to buy a previous generation model. Is it worth paying more for the newer generation?

Can anyone who has the similar/same model verify if this is true and what they are getting?

Anyone help would be much appreciated!

Wow, almost 18 months on and no response 😬.

I'm interested in the same question - anyone have any information, advice, figures etc? Thanks!

Hello Both,

There is a thread on this Forum about actual fuel figures.

Yes its worth buying newer model, next gen hybrid engine, more gear ratios on the 2.4lt engine gearbox, better regenerative braking.

That and the older vehicles are packing battery cells that are several years older.

Its not just the hybrid system, its age related wear on all the components like rubbers etc, regardless of mileage, entropy is a bugger.

Thanks Chris, that's helpful.

Just got a 2012 2.4l hybrid and am averaging only 6 km/l on ECO mode. What could be wrong?

14 mpg !

What kind of motoring are you doing.

How do you know (think) your kml is so low ?

Hi Jorge,

I can't take this any further with you, but I am absolutely sure you will get some helpful suggestions from other members.

Is your odometer reading Kilometres or Miles ?

Based on the photo? Unless this is very inaccurate?

Hey, also thinking of getting this vehicle and have the same question.

Did you sort out the issue and what is your real life mpg?

Would be super helpful!

Hello Richard,

Welcome to the Forum.

Not solved it yet. Not sure who I have to talk to. I het about 5,5 km/l as I usually do city driving. Of I make a long trip on the motorway, it goes up to 7++ km/l

Have you verified that the reading is probably accurate ? The fill up test ?

Or that the van is a gas guzzler, or has suspect electronics.

Not sure,

How do I check if the reading is accurate? Hopefully, it’s just that.

Fill-up test? One time I loaded 37 litres and got about 185 miles. What does that translate to?

Thanks in advance.

Mine is showing the same as 6.1km/l. However I worked out and roughly getting 26-27mpg doing motorway miles.

14mpg. around town with a 3.5L seems OK to me !

185/37 is 5.

5m / l is 22.5 mpg.

Not seriuously bad, depending on traffic and driving style.

I think your electronics are suspect and suspect you probably get a better mileage.

Fill up test.

Record mileage/kilometer reading.

Fill tank.

Run to about a quarter full.

Record odometer again.

Fill tank.

Consumption is distance covered divided by fuel used.

This, of course, assumes your odometer records distance correctly !

And is, of course, an average; you may need to consider your driving style and traffic too and 'adjust' accordingly.

But, it provides a benchmark.

Where can I have this looked at? Any shop that services Alphards? What do I tell the mechanic to look for? To recalibrate the “electronic mileage monitor”?

thanks in advance

If you just bought recently from a dealer, take it back to them and request they resolve the issue.

Act now, not later.

Sadly, I can't advise on who can look at it. See later !

I have an older model.

Before spending on 'repairs' I would try, again, to ascertain what mileage you are actually getting.

If your consumption, ignoring the dash reading, is 'normal', maybe you should consider ignoring the dash reading.

Do you have any warning lights on the dash ?

Call Japanese MPV Specialists, in Uxbridge, ask if they could take a 'quick look'.

A not-very-scientific estimate on my 2012 Hybrid for mainly motorway / A road driving is around 26-28mpg. The hybrid really comes into its own around town where it becomes much more frugal when not succumbing to the inner boy racer, such as being tempted to switch off the 'ECO mode' when pulling away at lights or using the automatic gearbox's 'sport' mode. I find that if I drive as smoothly as I can, avoiding temptation and the disadvantage of lugging the vehicle's weight from a dead start to a decent speed in a short amount of time, I can travel around town for what seems like pittance. But it's really nice to have the option of a decent amount of power if and when that is what is required - just don't do it too often and it's reasonably economical.

Juat out of curiosity, what is your reading for km/l with that kind of driving discipline?

Also, what even is EV Mode for? I tried it before but it only lasts for seconds.
