robstarrob Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 (edited) Hi all, Thanks for allowing me to join the forum. I was wondering if someone could help and give some advice regarding my powered sliding doors. The sliding door will open correctly but when I go to close it will only go halfway then open back up again. I can't see an obstruction that will cause it to open back up again. When I have to close it by hand, I have to use great force in doing so. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. cheers Edited May 18, 2023 by robstarrob
Setuffo Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Clean up your rail with WD40, dry with contact cleaner and apply with spray grease, every month better. 2
Alasdair Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 When it's been sticking have you de-selected the power door button on the dash? 1
robstarrob Posted May 18, 2023 Author Posted May 18, 2023 Hi Alasdair Yes I have tried with the power door de-selected. It takes quite a bit of force too close it. 1
Alasdair Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 I agree with Setuffo that there must be something about the rail causing this issue 1
Martylew Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Rail or cable. You will need to inspect both to find the issue. DON’T apply grease to the rail as suggested as this will attract dirt and in no time will make it much worse. 2
Setuffo Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Martylew, this sliding door aka power door design to lubricate and maintenance frequently to prevent jammed or wire broken, almost every month I see this problem in our workshop.
PZsurf Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Hi I had exactly the same problem 2 years ago, door eventually jammed half open in a thunderstorm! It was indeed a snapped cable, I believe the cable assembly consists of two loops of cables, and a plastic lug was jamming the mechanism...someone here with better technical knowledge may explain better. Anyway the nice guys at Stuart Spencer Autos in Tipton put in a new cable under warranty..no problems since. I now coat with silicone spray which doesn't seem to pick up dirt. 1

I will get my engineers at work to look at the door and get them to lubricate as you described earlier in this thread. thank you for the advise. 1

Hi Mate if you don't mind, can I ask how much this cost please.
dezufo Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 49 minutes ago, robstarrob said: Hi Mate if you don't mind, can I ask how much this cost please. The whole mechanism has to be replaced as the cable is not available separately, look on ebay for sliding door cable assembly. what happens is the plastic outer covering on the cable gets brittle and breaks off and jams the pulleys and motor, if cleaning the runners does not make it easier then if you cut the cable where it runs in the channel under the rear quarter window it will release the tension and allow the door to be opened/closed manually

Yes, lub but not with grease. Light oil, silicon spray 👍 1
PZsurf Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Hi Sorry can't help with the costs involved as it was a warranty job and they sourced the parts needed.Best ring round a few of the good specialists near you. As Dezufo says, it was the whole assembly needed changing. Good luck 1
James Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 I had similar problem and had to cut and remove the broken cable. Replacement cable kit is about£200. I lead quoted about£250 to fit it but only at end of season when not busy doing conversions so haven’t replaced it yet and just use on manual on that side 1
robstarrob Posted May 21, 2023 Author Posted May 21, 2023 Afternoon All Just to give an update for anyone that had been following this thread or for future reference. I had my engineer at work look at the door. He pumped the area with lube and noticed that the plastic casing on the wire had corroded and broken up. The more lube we sprayed and pushing and pulling the door back in manual mode helped to move/shift the broken plastic. My door is now operating as it should in automatic mode. However, there will still be more plastic inside the door and tubing that the wire goes through. So I will have to open the inside door panel and remove and clear all plastic. In the long run I will have to replace the wire completely. Many thanks to all that contributed to helping me resolve this issue. Cheers Rob 1
Tonyp Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 I have a similar problem with my passenger door on closing. It goes all the way into the aperture but the rear edge remains out about 10mm and therefore doesn’t latch closed. I can push it in and it then clicks and latches. any ideas on what is wrong (It’s a 2004 model) - it always opens electrically by the dash switch and outside handle but I’ve noticed it being intermittent when opening from the interior handle- sometimes not unlocking to open manually. Thanks for any guidance.
