Speedometer and odometer

I believe neither the speedo nor odo need to be changed on importation.

Bearing in mind the DVLA don't see either; I don't know whether the Auction sheet must be submitted to DVLA.

 

BUT ..

Some MOT testers will not be happy, others won't care and just will record what the odo figure as is ; although in kms, it will be recorded in miles; just the opposite of 'clocking'.

 

In the earlier models a conversion chip is fitted (which btw opens up the opportunity for clocking, hence another reason to see the Auction sheet).

The Auction certificate is a vital piece of official documentation as it records the odo setting, in kms, at the point of export.

 

I am sure the owners of the Gen 2 models can provide better information than I.

Thanks Dave that is the most interesting link so far. I drove my Alphard up from Derby to Edinburgh yesterday the the speed showing in Kl/H I little confusing.  Did you use the system in the link in your car?

My dealer fitted a HUD which shows mph in the corner of the windscreen (they can be bought for a few pounds). I use this all the time as it is easy to see without taking eyes off the road so I rarely look at the speedo which is still in km. At MOT I make sure the garage records the ODO in KM- no problem. I didn't see the point of spending money to change to mph and I believe there can be serious issues changing the ODO electronically- please do a lot of homework before deciding.

Couldn't agree more.

I too have HUD in MPH. Speedo/odo remains in KM. My MOT tester records it in KM.

I believe an import does not have to have the speedo converted if over ten years old. You just need a means to see the speed in MPH, hence the HUD.

 

It's a matter of opinion of course but I believe there will be an advantage to claiming that precisely nothing has been tinkered with in this respect when the time comes for selling it on.

as a retired car dealer who has imported over 100 cars from japan mainly figaros/shoguns the speed must be able to read in mph the same as the car needs a rear fog light its called compliance look it up !!!!!!!!

I did and it doesn't apply to the vehicle in question.

 

Like I said in my earlier answer, a speedo in mph is not required if the vehicle is 10 years or older.

 

A rear fog light is required to pass the MOT. A speedo in mph is not.

Many thanks for your input. The HUD sounds interesting.  I would rather see it without looking down.  Can you buy them and fit them yourself?  If so where can you get them?

Mine is a simple GPS speedo so it just needs an ignition supply for a neat installation or cigarette lighter for instant use. There are some CAN connected speedometers which might provide more info on Gen 2s but I have no experience of them.

It has a built in compass which I like.

 

When you are happy with the HUD reflection position, you stick a small polarizing filter on the screen to make the display crisp. My HUD reflection is practically level with my eyes and to the side. I will post a photo later.

 

The only criticism I have is that if the vehicle has not been used in a while (weeks), it takes a minute or so to obtain GPS reading but this doesn't happen very often.

When I used to regularly drive my car to Spain I had a sticker fitted to the inside of the windscreen.

 

At a glance you could see the km equivalent of miles, and vice versa.

 

Cost? About a fiver !

On 20 series, the speed signal feed to the dials is seperate to the signals running to the other ecus such as cruise, traction control, headunit, abs, auto parking assist. 

 

Worst that will happen is the conversion box will fail, in which case you just remove it/replace it.
