Hi All,

I have a 2006 Gen 1 facelifted Alphard.

I have a couple of keys, a Toyota 4 button one and a lookalike generic 4 button one, (see pic). On my drivers door handle and the tailgate there is a small black button which I think may require a smart fob (see pic) in order to unlock as at present they do not respond when pressed. Would I be correct in my assumption?

All 4 buttons on the key work for unlocking all and both side doors as both mine are powered.

For the smart locking to work, that 3 button key will need to be near the door.

As you walk away the doors should lock.

As far as I am aware (see below), those small buttons you refer to are receivers; they are not push buttons (but I could be wrong on this as I have never tried to use them).

There is a larger button on the lower edge of the tailgate, inside, which should function to close the hatch.

I have the same keys as you do, but only use the 4 button as my daily key.

Indeed, my daily set do not even have the four keys, or internals, present.

I used the smart key for locking and unlocking.

You do have the drivers door 'lock' switch enabled ?

Of course, the 4 key unit is used in the ignition as it contains the immobiliser key.

The small black buttons have a little bit of give on them hence my thinking I should press them when grabbing the door handle or unlocking the tailgate before using the latch to open it.

Can you explain what you mean by drivers door lock switch enabled?

I just tried my 'buttons'; one the driver's door and the one on the tailgate.

Both depress slightly, and beep quietly.

The driver's one does seem to activate some locking/unlocking mechanism audibly, but nothing seems to change.

Whether there is a programmable function, or not, I don't know.

Neither button opens the door or tailgate.

Please bear in mind that I have the smart fob very close to the door/tailgate.

There is a master door lock switch in the driver's door. Try toggling that to see if there is a difference.

Sorry I can't be of further help.

Not to worry,

It isn’t necessary for me to be able to use the buttons as the keys do a perfect job of unlocking, I was just curios to know. The main door lock switch on the drivers door can be programmed to lock/unlock in certain scenarios, ie above 15mph to lock all doors and unlock when in park mode. Other functions may be in the owners handbook that I haven’t got round to reading fully yet.

Thanks for your advice nonetheless.

Beeping when attempting to use the external door buttons to lock, at least on the 20 series, is an indicator that a fob is inside the vehicle.

It's a safety feature to prevent you locking your keys in the car.

Maybe you have a fob hidden in the car somewhere?

I know some of the remote start systems had a box that a fob was locked in, so that doors could be locked whilst the engine was running unattended.

Thanks for this Chris.

I will search the vehicle, I doubt I'll find anything as I have had Alphie for quite a while, and been through all the storage cubbies before; although not searching for a hidden key.

If there was a hidden fob, surely the system would prevent the vehicle being locked which I can always do.

I always use the smart fob for locks and the immobiliser for starting.

That said, maybe my van 'thinks' a smart fob is in the vehicle when it is actually in my hand less than a metre away.

What can be annoying, is when I step out the vehicle with the intention of opening another door (perhaps for my dog to get out) the car locks as I move much less than a metre away from the driver's door.
