My alphard had a full service yesterday, but the garage could not replace all the spark plugs as one was stuck.  They were scared to use too much force incase it broke the main head gasket.  The garage has said see how it goes and if there are any problems come back.   I'm just worried that I am going on a big camping trip with quite a lot of mileage in June.

It runs smoothly - had all the filters changed and 3 out of the 4 spark plugs.  Will it cause any issues or should I try another garage and risk the cracking of a head?

Not sure what to do. Try another garage or see how it runs

Hi Katt,

Unless the spark plug is giving issues* it doesn't need changing I would say.

Long-term you will need to get it sorted, I would wait for a quiet time and spray a penetrating oil around the stuck plug and leave it for a day or so.

Depending on which one it is you can try loosening it yourself or take it to a garage.

Leaving it at the garage for a few days so they can work on it with no rush might be a good idea, as the right tools need to be used else you risk rounding the plugs nut.

I have found a video on the internet that goes through the process (

The head gasket is a replaceable item but it is a lot of work (see

) which equates to a lot of money so don't be too frightened of that outcome.

Some good prep and getting someone competent and patient should get the job done.

I hope this helps.

* get a JOBD compatible OBD reader and check for any existing codes - clear them and then see if they come back. if the engine light comes on you will be able to determine whether it's the ignition system or not and, if it is, whether that particular spark plug is the issue.

I wouldn't panic about it. I've left spark plugs for 5 years on my early cars. As already mentioned. I'd spend the next couple of months putting penetrating oil on it. Hopefully she comes free. Snapping it would be a nightmare. Took me 42 hours to do the head gasket in my driveway🤣

Thank you everyone for the videos and the help.  Just that we are doing a big trip from Suffolk to Orkneys in June so would like to get it fixed.   I've put a request on our local community facebook page which is brilliant for recommendations and I think there is a mobile mechanic with a good reputation who is interested.  Which seems better as Alf can stay on the drive way :)  I've got a camping trip booked next weekend so it will have to wait until after that.

I have to say I love this forum.  It was what prompted me to buy Alf and we have had a lot of fun camping trips :)   Funnily enough, we were the first Alfs in our area and now we see plenty, become quiet common.     But we know how special they are.

Thanks again guys - much appreciated as always x
