How long did it take you? Which unit did you buy for carplay? Thanks
It depends on what head unit you already have installed, i chose this one because i wanted the touchscreen to work a the controller.
THe principle is mostly the same on all units though, and there are various places on aliexpress selling similar units

Took me about 2hours, but this was to discover the wires needed, some routing of wires and trying different ways to route the flexi connector to the screen.
I bought this: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mPcGuRy

I found a 10 series CD-ROM manual (updated 2007) on Jauce and I'm tempted to take the plunge.
It works out a tad under £60 when you add all the postage and commission fees.
I guess I'm a bit wary of buying from a Japanese auction site but all the costs seem to be laid out and they appear to be geared up for international delivery.
Jauce and zenmarket are perfectly legit, I have had no issue so far, except for the import costs which are shocking.
I think the cdrom i ordered was about £20 to ship

Wow, almost 18 months on and no response 😬.
I'm interested in the same question - anyone have any information, advice, figures etc? Thanks!
Yes its worth buying newer model, next gen hybrid engine, more gear ratios on the 2.4lt engine gearbox, better regenerative braking.
That and the older vehicles are packing battery cells that are several years older.
Its not just the hybrid system, its age related wear on all the components like rubbers etc, regardless of mileage, entropy is a bugger.

I am in the process of buying a Vellfire 2010 model, and was wondering if anyone can give me a ball park figure of getting the head unit upgraded professionally.
Also what is the general consensus regarding whether the upgrade is worth it or not.
When you say upgrade, do you mean getting carplay/android auto added, or a full replacement?
I still for the most part BT connect my phone and use android apps like tunein radio to provide radio streams.
The upgrade unit that some dealers are selling works fine, I did a self installation, so it only cost around £180, instead of the £350ish being bandied about.
for the price, I can use the headunit screen to display waze/sygic, I have some audio apps, and mirroring seems to work perfectly fine, the good thing is, switch away from aux input, and everything else on head unit works as standard, even the cameras cut in when they are supposed to.

The overlay is generated by the ecu, with steering wheel position/angle, and sonar data.
the actual video from the camera should be analogue, if you do not have the 4 wire connector, then you must have the loom that places the signal on one of the power connectors.
Its a shame i didnt save all the 10 series wiring whilst the russian mirror was live, and i cant justify the £60 odd for the japanese maintenance cdrom
-
Should ask - do you have auto parking or the 3 camera setup?
-
no, that is a GVIF connector, it is used to transmit video digitally - often used in conjunction with overlay data - so this blue connector connects to the parking assist ecu, where it can combine video inputs and overlay, such as reverse lines, front side view angles, graphics for auto parking and sonar and the front/side camera images.
The rear camera should exist on one of the other connectors, but I can only advise on the 20 series.
-
2 is parking assist system
3 GPS antenna
6 Telemetric system (G-Book, Toyota assist)
7 not used on mine, not sure what this is
8 I think is external DVD/CD multichanger
13 is TV/DBT & antenna
Somewhere in the other connectors, you'd have Aux in (which you have already discovered) Electronic Toll Collection system, speakers etc, rear screen connection etc

Yes you are correct, that is the connector, the wire colours No 1 blue with a yellow stripe No 3 red. I haven’t been out yet as the battery is on charge but it still works with the hand brake off
i think the pink stripped wire is reverse signal, too, if you need it.

This may be compatible, and in stock:

-
This is the control box that is plug and play to bypass parking brake and speed sensor - out of stock here, but gives you something to look for if you want a decent solution:

Kit came with a choice of switches, even a decent OEM looking one for a blanking plate
-
I also see, this grey port can be fitted with an aftermarket switch, that can be used to turn off and on the bypass, as example in this:

answered in other post, hopefully its the 5 pin grey connector that has both the speed signal and parking brake signal.
-
If you have multimeter, you can confirm signal is going from a voltage, down to 0 volts when handbrake released, please let us know, so we can build on the knowledge

They look like more standard toyota connectors, should be the 5 pin grey connector, as this is commonly used on older headunits. (marked 12 on your photo)

do you have km/h to mph converter box fitted?
Error codes on the 'U' range are usually canbus related communication issues, and not actual sensor data - so any electronics fitted after car was bought may be shorting something or introducing noise on to one of the signal paths
As Steve above said - check battery first, if it has not been changed on importing, it may be at the end of its serviceable life, you need a decent working voltage to ensure the electronics are functioning correctly
-
I own a 20 series, but if anyone is willing to spend some cash, they can get a genuine toyota workshop manual in either paper format or an 'online' CDROM from Jauce (Perhaps Zenmarket too)

I just purchased a 20series cdrom for £70, call me mad, but I really want the specific wiring diagrams for the Japanese model (I have the wiring for the export models as seen in china and Russia)

Hope you don’t mind me asking Did you just cut the wires then tape them up?
I cut the wires, and loom side insulated.
the side connected to head unit added little latching blocks with added wire to ground.
I am planning on adding a switch in to blank panel, to toggle from regular operation.

From your previous post you say you have to cut two wires so the screen does not go blank over 5mph, what are the colours of the wires and where are they located at the back of the head unit.
my Alphard is a 2010, so the plugs are very different.
I was able to use a wiring diagram and test meter to find the right wires.
Unfortunately, the site in russia that had the wiring diagrams for the 10series seems offline (They have not paid their server host), and I did not make copies of diagrams at the time.
The wires for reverse, speed sense, and steering controls were all found on my main power in plug.

Next question does the KEY 1 and KEY 2 wires need to be connected if so where to.
I have not connected these, because the audio is routed via the box into my existing headunit, the volume controls on steering still work.
I imagine by wiring these in, it will activate the other keys.
I have the 18speaker amp model headunit, I believe I have identified the correct wires for the steering, but I have not done an ohms reading on them to confirm.

probably cheaper to buy an aftermarket LED flasher unit from aliexpress.
-
the touchscreen (if it is like what i bought) requires opening up the screen, and disconnecting the touchscreen cable, and placing the supplied splitter inline.

setting aside the argument about mpg or power, in Japan, the 2 fuel grades are 91 and 98, arguably, this is the reason they use the premium fuel as recommended, whereas in the UK regular is often 95RON.
Just spare a thought for our USA cousins, their RON values are barely in the 90s
