Interesting topic, thanks. I bought the proper Toyota Techstream software and cable for £40 off of ebay. As you can imagine, it can configure every feature of the car.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124808047632

If you want a simple setup of the software and drivers, you can install a virtual machine of windows xp with techstream preinstalled - over on this forum.

Is there anything that Techstream can configure that CarScanner with a bluetooth ODB cannot configure.

It looked like exactly the same options as CarScanner in the configuration section, but haven’t had time to dive in properly. I was using the cheapest cable I could find on eBay and the virtual machine image from the link above, which is version 12 or something. I don’t know if that makes a difference or not.

I guess the only person who could answer that is someone who has used both.

As far as I can see, carscanner accesses the same ECUs as techstream.

I bought techstream just to program my own spare key, as the cost of the cable/software and unprogrammed key was less than a key to be supplied and programmed for me by a specialist!

If you can get a decent BT OBD2 dongle, carscanner is perfectly adequate

Edit: I leave the BT dongle connected permantly, so I can fire up carscanner whenever I want to do checks, or have additional gauges on display, one of the gauges I found useful was the one showing what gear you were currently in, as when in 'D' it will actually show the gear changes numerically

I have a Veepeak OBD Check BLE OBD2 that is connected all the time. The plan was to have info displayed on my Android head unit when I get round to fitting it. When I found out I could make changes with CarScanner then that was a bonus.

I did look at Techstream as I can get a copy and then get a cable, but if it does not do anything extra then I wont worry about it. I guess CarScanner has complete access level as Techstream.

yeah, some android headunits (like the tesla style ones) have a canbus connection, and let you adjust the settings like in carscanner, too.

Where did you get a blank spare key from?

I ordered this last year (price remains the same £55)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255021256169

He does 3 (single sliding door!), 4 and 5 button (If you have electric opening boot)

You may be able to find cheaper, but the key and at the time the VCI adaptor with techstream was under £100

Send a message to him to confirm compatibility with Alphard.

I was hoping that there was an option on car scanner to stop the central locking activating when you start driving, but no option for that either.

Apologies for not getting back sooner, this weekend has been unexpectedly hectic. Back to work tomorrow for a rest though.

Anyway, my car locks the doors when I get up to a certain speed, I think this is what you want to turn off?
My manual calls it “Vehicle speed sensitive auto lock”.

Here are the other options you can set or cancel.

And the procedure is here:

So I think it’s like this.
Get in car

Shut door

Press engine start switch twice without touching brake pedal

Shift to neutral

Press lock button on drivers door for 5 seconds

Locks should operate to confirm you have set or cancelled the auto speed locking.
Test drive to see if it’s worked.

Brilliant, thank you.

Not had chance yet. Been trying to decipher what the previous owner did with the stereo wiring. Trying to put in an Android head unit and find the reverse camera wiring. I think the previous owner though the wiring the the overhead screen was it and mangled that.

Will let you know once Ive tried it.

Just for info, on a 20 series, the following data sheets show all the possible settings accessible via the canbus/obd port:

Yeah some of those settings are not available on CarScanner app. Mainly the ones for locking the doors.

Ahh, so this may be a minor strength of the techstream software then, as I am certain I have seen these as options.

I got the key and programmed it, but I've been quoted over £50 by a locksmith to cut the key blade to match the existing one. Seems very high to me. Where did you get yours done?  Cheers.

Wouldn't / couldn't do mine, but earlier key type.

Clearly its down to individuals, because Timpson's in Exeter said they cannot cut the key unless its provided by them for 'reasons' (probably a juicy mark-up), where as my local key cutter took a look at the existing key and said sure, but I'd have to supply a blank.

Timpson's In Kings Lynn, they seemed happy to do it, and were interested because they had already had a couple of people approach them to cut a key, but without blanks they had to turn them away.

They said if the key didn't work, they'd refund, because it was the first one they tried of that type, and I gave them the details of where I bought my blank from.

Key works fine.
