Electric Steering Damper Replacement

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

I want to change the electric motor steering damper and spacer and need some advice. Recently taken into a garage to diagnose front rattling from the steering column and had the intermediate steering shaft changed under warranty but still have the rattling sound going over bumps. I’ve purchased the damper and spacer as thought this maybe the problem but is it a thing someone like myself with no experience can change? Is there anyone in the Southwest Devon area that is confident to help out?

Hi Pete,

Looks straightforward to me. I've just ordered the parts as I have a rattle as well and I think it's the damper. Apparently if you don't sort it timely it can cause a more significant failure with the column.

TC's anything goes has a tutorial on Youtube. I plan to follow it and replace mine in a week or so. Will report back when I do.

Looking at the process, it seems simple enough, if you have dexterity and tools.

If you need a hand/2nd person, pm me if you are near to Exeter.

Thanks Chris.

I looked at the video and thought the opposite 🤣 I am going to call the company that advised changing the intermediate steering shaft as I took it in for the knocking sound and despite me saying several times it maybe the steering damper they said it was ok, so really they should repair it.  I’ll see what they say and if no luck I’d appreciate your help Chris, I live in Exeter 👍🏼

Thanks Chris for your generous offer, the garage that did the steering rack has offered to fit the part for me but really appreciate the offer.

Took me around an hour yesterday. Replaced the anti roll bar bushes and droplinks at the same time and all the rattling is now gone. I also had a slight wobble through the steering at low speeds which is also gone.

The old bush didn’t look too bad to me but while I was in there I replaced it anyway.

It’s an easy enough job. Hardest part is lining everything up for reassembly.

Yes or thereabouts, possibly less. It's a very straightforward job.

Does that include replacing all that 'gubbins' ?

It looks a huge job to me.

I think you are very competent, or brave, or both !

Yes start to finish. It's not a very complicated job despite the photo. I believe only three bolts hold the column up, two for the PAS motor and around half dozen to get panels and airbag off. A 2/5 on the Haynes difficulty scale 😀

Please advise me where I can purchase a Haynes for my Alphie !

I do admire your achievement, but not for me, far too risky when looking through my eyes and using my fingers.

Sorry, no Haynes that I know of.

I was teasing you.

I am not aware of any comprehensive Maintenance Manual for the Gen 1 vehicles; or indeed later models.

I have a similar AnH20 steering column rattle!….I have changed the damper , just reach up and you can unbolt the motor , fish out old damper and refit new one, in my case it wasnt that!….it serms to be play in the actual column splines…so will need to pull the column head off completely , a new one is at least £5-600!, (4520A-58010)

Mines going in on Friday 10th for the damper, hoping it resolves the problem.

Quite an amazing difference for such a small / cheap part. Glad to see you got it sorted :)

Yep still can’t work out how such a small part can create the noise generated 🤷‍♂️

  • 5 weeks later...

they all gone sooner or later and if you have symptoms as described this would be the cheapest start point before you hit the expensive steering shaft/rods path
good coffee or tea. 1hr good music

cost about 20GBP parts  but satisfaction is priceless  :)
