No Drive - Urgent Help Please

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

First post, but I've been a member a while as a recent owner of a 2010 2.4l Vellfire.

Unfortunately after only 8-weeks of ownership, it broke down whilst my wife was driving, and just dis-engaged drive as she was pulling into supermarket car park - luckily she was clear of the junction and managed to get to a safe spot.

The engine was running fine, but when selecting drive or reverse, it would change to D or R on the dashboard, but wouldn't actually engage, and just rev when pressing the accelerator.

We had it in to a garage (Japanese car "specialist"), who could not diagnose the issue as there were no fault codes, and didn't want to take on the job (I've struggled with finding anyone who touches imports near where I'm based in East Yorkshire).

Speaking to the garage we bought it from they suggested it could be the torque converter and sent a re-conditioned one out. We found a garage to replace the torque converter, and when they did, they found two "locator lugs" had broken off - which explained why it wouldn't engage drive - which was fairly positive that the issue had been diagnosed and resolved.

Everything was boxed back up, fluids replaced and ready to go - but even with the new torque converter it won't engage drive. They're getting no faults when plugged into the fault reader - everything is as it should be but it still won't drive.

We're supposed to be using it for a long week away on Wednesday evening - which is now very much in jeopardy.

Has anyone else had this issue, and is there something simple that needs resetting? The mechanic is a bit lost given the old torque converter was clearly broken - it was replaced, but there are no fault codes and nothing else seems amiss.

Hello David,

Welcome to the Forum.

So sorry to learn of your plight.

After only eight weeks of ownership, and buying from a garage, you will have Consumer Rights.

What warranty do you have ? Even the shortest warranty should be 90 days; more than 8 weeks.

I would be speaking with Trading Standard, Citizens Advice, and maybe a Solicitor, before speaking with the Garage again.

They may take responsibility, they may not; you will need to give them an opportunity to rectify the issue before taking further action.

Sending you a re-conditioned torque convertor is, imho, pathetic. Was the warranty parts only ?

Please send me a Personal Message and let me know the 'garage' you bought from.

At this stage, better not to name (and shame) them in this public forum.
