Hello playmates

I'm a new Alphard owner and it's been a joy...

But the last couple of days it's been sulky about starting after a brief stop

The engine simply won't turn over

But left alone for a while, it then decided it could start after all

Happened more than once

On one occasion, I got on the dashboard a red engine light with a black key symbol on it, which might be a clue

Any advice greatly appreciated

Hi there!

I don't know how the immobiliser reader works on your particular model, but on one car I've had the chip move within the key housing, not at all far, but far enough so the ring in the steering cowl wouldn't see it.

I suggest this as you say you've seen the immobiliser key symbol come up.

Also - is there much play in the ignition barrel?

Just a thought into the mix, if it's a bit loose, could the key be a tiny bit further out than it should be, which will mean the reader ring can't see it?

It's a very fine area that they read!

That is useful detail Nev and as you say chimes with what I saw on the dash -- thanks very much

Starter motor failed completely yesterday -- happily my new best friend Nick from the AA was able to diagnose, source a replacement and fit within the day -- I might have suspected earlier but the problem was very intermittent and the bus often started without trouble.

Yay glad it's back up and running sweetly!!

And hopefully the brief problem hasn't damaged your enthusiasm for it!

Thr light on the dash was a total red herring!!

Cheers, Nev

Hello Tony,

Welcome to the Forum.

Please change your vehicle in your profile to the correct model.

Check your battery is fully charged and check the condition of the battery leads at both ends.

What happens with your dash lighting and warning lights ?

Doi you have an aftermarket alarm, as I thought these models don't have OEM alarms, immobiliser yes, alarm no.

I have a top of the range but no alarm.

Have you checked the main battery fuse ?

Hello Rojie,
My correct model should be the 2011 Alfa Romeo 2.4L.
The battery seems charged—home recovery service confirmed it's fully charged (though I'm skeptical since the car has been idle for half a year). However, I can hear the alarm and activate hazard lights. I haven’t checked the fuses and don’t know their locations. How should I inspect them, and what precautions are needed? Thanks for your advice.Hi

Hi Tony,

I was only teasing.

Can you please change your vehicle type in your profile.

Otherwise you will not receive any, or relevant, answers to any of your queries.

It is important the membership knows which vehicle you have.
