Looking at a series 10 alphard

Featured Replies

Looking to buy a 3l series 10 alphard. I currently drive a acr50 estima and I thought the 30 was more robust so it makes me think early model better but I may be wrong.

I would love, though, to have mod cons like Lane control and radar cruise, I have read that these are available but struggling to find. What symbol would show this? Also does the Lane control (more common) actually adjust steering or just warn? Is it also correct that it only works with original head unit?

What options would others recommend? Is the standard "adaptive dampers" sometimes referred to as air suspension worth it

Many thanks

Lane control is standard and just monitors and warns that you are drifting, it can be switched off on the dash. Cruise control does not come as standard, but it is easy to add to any post 2005 as the wiring & ecu etc are already fitted, and you just fit the control stalk, costs about £20. Radar cruise has a sensor behind a clear cover built into the front bumper so that is a giveaway. The TEMS suspension has 3 settings, sport/normal/comfort and is good but if the shocks start to leak then it works out expensive to replace them, I had a fail on the mot due to both rear shocks leaking, I fitted standard shocks and left the fronts set on normal, have not noticed any difference when driving, but I tend not to race it anyway. Nearly all owners remove the original head unit as it is all in Japanese and the radio frequencies are different as well as the satnav. Steer clear of the pearl white as they have a peeling problem

Lane keep assist does not come standard on 10 series. Which is I think a blessing. Cruise can be retrofitted easily in face lift (Post 2005) models. Definitely recommend 3.0l over 2.4. especially with facelift 5 speed gearbox. I would avoid TEMS dampers, moon roof, and in general too many features.

With regards to handling i have fitted stiffer rear springs which improved roll behaviour greatly.

is there a reason you say its a blessing not to have lane keep assist?

also retrofitting cruise - i assume this is regular cruise as opposed to radar cruise

Also its interesting that you say to avoid the features that surely make the japanese cars so attractive. can you explain why these features are not recommended?

Retrofitting radar will, if possible, be very expensive.

TEMS is very expensive if the shockers need replacing.

I feel sure Chris.ac has provided a detailed amswer to that question in this Forum.

More gizmos means more things to go wrong, more expense; but some make the Alphies a cut above other machines.
