There seems to be a reluctance of some insurance companies and garages refusing to work on or cover Japanese imports. Also as they are usually nearing 20 or more years old. I’m perplexed because spares and service items are easily available. Ordering through Toyota garage parts department saved me money as some items were common to other vehicles.  Even when presenting the garages with the spares they are still reluctant to service the vehicle. Luckily my garage has an adjoining Toyota import dealer.  I’ve spent more money on servicing our Citroen Picasso than the Alphard. And most of those spares are available locally off the shelves. Our car was hit by another vehicle while we were shopping and this was another reason we were refused insurance because they wanted to write off the vehicle as they had undervalued it luckily the bodywork shop manager was able to correct their mistake. We had spent thousands updating door mechanism and brakes as well as replacing body parts. Depending on whether we can cover the insurance next year, we may sadly say goodbye to the Alphard. Our kids love the space and comfort it affords giving them their own comfort and security on a journey. I’ve yet to find another vehicle that has this type of comfort and finish. I’ve also geared of people having difficulty with the camper conversions. My advice try getting quotes 2 or 3 months prior to renewal.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. We have megathread for garages. Please try to post your recommendations about the Japanese importer and garage there. People need to network and make it work for us collectively. Thankyou

Posting as this might help someone.

I called Admiral to insure my Vellfire 3.5 Z model, they only have X and S (and another one, but not a Z) listed if I try to get insurance on their website.

The rep took my query away to their new business team to get the model added, and have came back to say:

S model is the 7 seater variant

X model is the 8 seater variant

So when I do my insurance quote I've just to select the S variant.

You may want to give them a call if you do decide to get insurance, as I wouldnt want anyone to purely use my own experience for your own.

They actually gave me a pretty decent quote of £360 which I'm going ahead with. 36 yo, 12 years NCB, 19 years driving.

I insured mine a month ago through Admiral and it came in at about £22 a month for myself and the missus (3.0L V6 2004 Alphard). I do have 14 year no claims though, so that probably helped - and I have another vehicle insured through Admiral (a 2016 Ford Ranger 2.2 XLT). I think I was an extra 80p a month to protect my no claims too!

Certainly wasnt straightforward finding insurance , but of the 4  quotes I did actually manage to get, ( 27/7/2022), best price was with Adrian Flux, £260 for myself & partner, full comp S,D&P.

(Alphard 3.0 camper)

None of the comparison sites even recognised the vehicle & even some insurers on the list on these pages who insure JDM vehicles, wont offer cover on camper vans anyway.

Adrian Flux is a broker.

It's worth checking who the Insurer/Underwriter is.

Campers are more difficult to insure.

LV and their various subsidiaries are worth trying for anyone have trouble finding adequate cover.

Hello all,new to the forum and recently acquired a 2009 Vellfire G Edition 3.5 v6

Jap cover quoted me £850 with legal fees. The next best quote was with Brentacre at 560 Fully Comprehensive (£500 excess) Free legal cover and 90 day Euro cover.

They mirrored my 4years NCB from my main vehicle, Mercedes C class.

FWIW, I've Just insured our 2003 rear camper conversion for my wife and I with Adrian Flux (AXA) for £240 with 3 years no claims, 6000 miles p.a. limit and including a couple of previous small accidents/claims. This was around £50 less than anyone else quoted and also provided a higher level of cover so pretty happy with that.

LV= again - yes I know - they only accept 2.4lire if campervan converted - you must call, do not use online AND ask to insure a "Toyota Motorcaravan".

I believe Safe Guard is a sister company of Scenic.

As above, Scenic will insure a converted van.

I seem to recall Safe Guard (at that time) wouldn't, but did refer me to Scenic.
