I wonder if anyone can help me- I have a Toyota Alphard 2003 , 2.4 automatic  and it is playing up. The dash engine light is coming on when I start moving and it is not responding when I put my foot on the accelerator. I am up in Newcastle, England and local garages are scratching their heads - one garage changes the auto transmission speed sensors but didn’t do the trick. I actually took it to local Japanese import place in Cramlington but all they said was a speed sensor A needed replacing... however have changed both already- see above! I am wondering if another type of sensor is playing up but the Toyota dealer said that the above sensors are the only ones coming up on their parts computer!! So wondering if anyone has run into similar problems and if you could recommend a garage to do it. Cramlington place are booked up until May time!!! Thanks again for any help.

Cheers

Hi,

I dropped your problem into toyopet, received an unusual response below.

Forgive the translation this is exactly as they sent it.

CVT Torque Converter Problem Description
In the torque converter of Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), there is insufficient strength in the
component parts of the lock up clutch since its production dispersion. Therefore, when frequently repeat
acceleration and deceleration, the lock up clutch may be does not operate, and a warning light turns on,
it becomes the vehicle runs with fail-safe.

Have you got a code reader? 2.4's are hard to read 98% of the time. I would check the sensors on the exhaust as most of the time they fail and preform such actions.

Hi folks

It has now been at 5 mechanics - still not sorted - the code that keeps coming up is PO500 - pointing to speed sensor A - had it changed and the electrics checked and this seems fine. They are now saying that it may be the gearbox - it is in auto electricians and they say that all is good with electrics and they are pointing me towards going to auto gearbox specialist?! I presume this is the CVT you mentioned above - I did some checking myself and it seems the drive belt on the CVT seems to wear out with age?? I suppose the next step is get this checked but they seem to be saying a whole new gearbox needs replacing. I am not an engineer so any advice would be good?? Nightmare!!

Cheers

I have the same issue with my alphard 2.4 2014. The engine management light appear on dashboard.

Sometimes it doesn't go into gear, engine reving up. I turn off engine and restarted.

I might try and replace the spark plug

Coil/cable since its already done 74k miles.

Does anyone know how to get the spark plug Coil?

Thanks in advance, Vinny

No one replied to this post to say if the problem was resolved, thats a shame.

For a start, try disconnecting power to any speedo electronic convertors, to rule out the combination meter readings being a problem.

How long have you had vehicle?

I also attach diagnosis flow for an engine DTC P0500, as this appears to be the code mentioned in previous messages

Try also switching off auto 4wd and traction controls if you have the buttons to do so, limit the monitoring ECUs to try and limit the scope of the electronics that are preventing car from moving.
