Warning lights help

Recommended Posts

Hello

Had our hybrid 56 plate Alphard for quite a few months now and had these lights come in recently and then the hybrid system stops working.

Has anyone got any recommendation/ help

Thanks

When you say the hybrid stopped working, did the car stop running?   I have been told that the car is useless if the hybrid doesn’t work.  I’m interested to know if it means replacing the hybrid battery and/or the inverter.  How have you fared after these lights have come on?

My 4 lights came on after reversing the car a bit. 4WD, VSC, ABS and the red car alert came on. The hybrid is off but the car can still be driven. The car slows down once I reach over 60kmh and accelerate again to 60. It's a Alphard 2008 ATH10 hybrid car too.

Using diag pin 4 short to pin 13 on ODB2 socket and switch on engine (without starting the car) codes revealed as follows:-

  • ABS code: 94, 95 (95 is lost com, to yaw sensor(lateral acceleration sensor) and 94 is lost com. to ABS control module.)

  • VSC code: 62, 63 (62 Abnormal battery voltage VSC sensor) (63 Malf in booster pedal force switch)

Any suggestions?

Check your tyre pressures are equal across all wheels.

If ABS ecu detects a large enough delta measurement between wheels, it will throw an error.

The fact you have ABS, VCS (Skid control) coming on seems related, do you have standard 16/17" wheels?

Thanks Chris. I did that before I gave up. Finally I got it fixed from a good mechanic I know and he replaced with a 2nd hand HV Inverter (ODBII read the error P3125) The 4 lights came back soon after we took it for a spin so he reseted it. The only light that remained on was the red car with the exclamation mark. Once again he took in for another check. This time he replaced the cooling pump for the HV inverter and it was gone. It's day two now and so far did another 100km drive

Hope this helps someone.

Hiya Taifansi,

I have the same warning lights but I can't find a garage in Cardiff that is willing to sort it. They do imports but not hybrid or hybrid not imports.... think I'll take it back to Scotland as they think its those parts also, I've lost faith with the Welsh ☹️

Hi, Somebody recommended "a garage in Exeter" to me recently, I've had a look and think it may be this one https://www.hybridrepairservices.co.uk/contact , however I haven't had a need to check them out yet.

Regards Chris, (2003 Hybrid)

Hi Sunny, get in contact with Mark at the Hybrid Repair Service - he travels nationwide and came up to Herts from Exeter to refurbish my hybrids battery.

It's also an ecocamper from campers Scotland 🙂

We have tried second hand inverters but not worked. Our hybrid specialist has another to try.  We changed the cooling water pump. It’s an ongoing project for us at the moment!

Did you make any progress?

Finally we got fixed this mysterious issue. Here is our troubleshooting and fixing know-how for folks in the same shoes:
- the red and orange warning lights came up for us after the hybrid (traction) battery got utilized without proper cooling, i.e. the inverter overheated, because its coolant pump was weak or faulty
- we could trigger the issue with running the air conditioner at max for ~20 mins (while the car parked), or ~40 mins driving in traffic at 25°C outdoor temperature
- the inverter overheating error ultimately had shut down the car completely which if happened we opened the hood and let it cool down (~20 mins) and tried to restart it till all the orange warning lights went away. It was possible to drive the car with the red error light (car icon with explanation mark), but it ran in "gas mode" only and hybrid functions didn't work. A repairman said it doesn't damage the car, but do it in emergency only (e.g. get home in a short distance).
- BTW even after the car cooled down completely (e.g. overnight) we were able to clear the red error with restarting the car 3-4 times. Although, if we didn't clear the error and the car was completely cold the hybrid functions did work, but the display didn't show that on the power flow screen.
- we tried to acquire an original OEM inverter coolant pump (part # G9020-58012), but it wasn't possible at the local Toyota dealership here (Canada). However we could find it on the internet for $500+ CAD...
- we bought a cheap aftermarket one for ~$50 CAD from eBay (we figured we can use the original metal console, so we didn't buy the ~$200+ CAD version that contains that metal part)
- labour for changing it was ~3 hrs (~$450 CAD)
- we double-checked the operation of pump in cold state with opening the lid on the top of rights side radiator. The level of coolant fluid is pulsing (suddenly drops and raises back).
- we tested the solution with a ~300km day trip in ~28°C outdoor temperature while the air conditioner was running. Yaaaay! 😀
Hope this could help other families!

Hi Mark,

Our basic ODB2 reader did not show any error, but the mechanics' special JDM reader listed a lot of error codes that were all related / originated in the malfunction of our inverter coolant pump (that time we just assumed because the error was consistent with the overheating...the other possibility would be the inverter itself).

Their shop is in Saanichton, they specialized to JDM cars hence their name: Rocky Mountain Imports (250-656-6024).

They are correct professionals, I can recommend them.

Good luck!

The same lights appear on ours and the hybrid stops working but you can still drive it, it goes off for a bit than it goes off and hybrid works again too, however this problem has only started since we changed the battery of the vehicle

Same problem has just started on my 2009 Alphard this morning. Battery was dead as I had been away for several weeks and light just appeared after starting with battery pack. Took it for a short drive and same issue as others in that Hybrid doesnt kick in and stays on petrol. In addition to red car with exclamation mark there's also another red car constantly flashing on the left of the display which I haven't seen before.

One forum suggested a way to get rid of the red car/exclamation light was to clean the battery cooling fan from underneath the passengers seat. Anyone tried this?

Also anyone know a mechanic that will deal with Alphard Hybrids in the Gloucestershire area?
