Previously with Direct Line but they won’t now insure camper conversions. Caravan Guard has provided fully comprehensive cover on. 3.0 AWD 2007 Alphard with European breakdown recovery for <£400 but they referred to a list of ‘approved’ converters as they won’t cover all conversions - something I hadn’t considered when I was originally sourcing my conversion!

I was with DL for my previous car and changed the cover for my campervan a few weeks back when I took delivery. They had changed the policy to be a Toyota Previa. When the renewal came through, I called to get them to change it to an Alphard and when they did, the renewal was withdrawn - they won't insure it.

I have just insured through Just Kampers (01256 444 546) for £425. I am 63, full no claims, no accidents etc.

In the process of buying a vellfire, just tried to get a quote from Jap Cover, as soon as I said it was getting a conversion, it was a straight no. Which is painful….any advice?

Try Scenic, part of the LV Group, but there is a maximum value they will insure.

Thanks for that, decent quote from Adrian flux so far, but still digging!

My Aviva quote went up …. By £10! And then I added Euro cover for £28, so £288 total. I didn’t even bother shopping around and took that. It even offers ‘business use’ as standard, not that I need it. That’s on 8000 miles per annum.

You may see quite an increase if you convert to LPG; or they may ask you to find another insurer as they did with me.

..... And I only have a small Campingaz 907 bottle

Just be careful if you want to use the Chunnel.

With LPG you can't !

Had a look at scenic online. One question….as I can’t register the vellfire as a campervan after conversion I’m guessing they won’t insure it as a campervan? It will still be MPV on documents which may be an issue? Please tell me it’s not!

They are insuring my Alphard, 2006, MZ G, with rear conversion by a professional specialist.

Nowadays it is near impossible to reclassify a vehicle. Why do you want to reclassify ?

DVLA only approve about 5% of all applications. You can read about it on the DVLA website.

Phone Scenic directly.

If they still won't; ask them who their sister company is (Safeguard at a guess) that will, although you converted will need to be approved/recognised as a professional outfit.

Many conversions involve what were commercial vans, and many won't meet the DVLA requirements anyway.

Is the Vellfire registered in the UK yet ?

Yeh, it’s already registered and the conversion going in is being done by Adrian Bristow but he doesn’t normally do them as an advertised service. I’m feeling this is starting to become an issue lol.

I don't understand why you think you have an issue.

Did you phone Scenic yet.

There are, of course, other Insurance companies as per the list; but the situation does seem to change quite frequently.

Hi again,

AF is a broker, not an insurer.

It may be worth your while understanding which company is insuring your vehicle.

Seems the insurance comes under LV, so at £285 fully comp seems a fairly good deal for a start point.

Strange. LV wouldn't cover my conversion. Does seem a decent price too.

It certainly seems that Insurance Companies can be quite inconsistent when offering cover.

My driving record is fine, and my NCB maximum. Odd.

However, you got yourself sorted with a decent company. I'm glad.

For my 2009 Toyota Alphard with a disabled access seat, Advance Insurance quoted £861 with 5 years NCD and my wife as a named driver, I went for it. I pay £450 on Mercedes B180 with everything else being the same (postcode with high car thefts). Adrian Flux couldn't quote for some reason, Mark Richards quoted £1680 blaming my postcode!!  I will look for a better quote next year, but wanted to grab the first reasonable quote this time.

Thanks all for sharing information, very useful.

Was it 3.5L by any chance?

Wonder how different are 3.5L v6 engine quotes, all else being equal..

Hi. We have had our 2008 3ltr V6 Alphard a week now. Adrian Flux quoted me £460 + £99 for breakdown cover. In the end I went on a comparison website and it came up with Grove & Dean who are a broker. I went with them in the end at £437 fully com, including breakdown cover. The insurer is Highway which is part of LV. I did have to send them photos of the vehicle inside and out to show that it had been professionally converted (by Northstar on the Isle of Wight). The fact that my partner (a named driver) is on a 3yr restricted licence with the DVLA for a medical condition would have increased it a bit.

I was a bit surprised that the road tax was £295!

Insuring a new import 3.5 2010 Alphard was proving tricky with most insurers only listing the Vellfire for this age and engine size, thanks to this list I contacted  Mark Richard (Jap Cover), and was sorted out quickly and cheaply £320 (fully comp with 6 years NCD)

Just found out Churchill won’t renew our insurance. No letters or communication we found out through DVLA letter as our insurance automatically renews. 🤯😤

There is plenty to choose from I suppose. These insurance guys themselves don't know what logic or algorithm they follow. Some actuarial super computer is making decisions in the background. Please post your findings. Thankfully many contacts and tips here.
