I have just got a replacement gearbox from Japan as my last one failed. Prior to fitting the replacement gearbox i dropped the sump to change the filter and noticed quite a lot of metal shavings on all 3 sump magnets. I believe it is normal to have some metal shavings but not sure if this amount is normal. thanks for any help Martin.

Hello Martin,

I am NOT a mechanic; I would be concerned.

The real issue is where the filings came from ?

I assume you know they didn't come from your engine.

Probably needs a really good flush, possibly more than once.

Hopefully a more knowledgeable member will offer better advice.

It's normal to get shavings in there that's why there is magnets. Over time the gear box will shave a little.

So only be concerned if you have any gearbox problems such as gears slipping, grinding, problems getting into gears or surging.

Other than that just give the gear box 3 - 4 flushs of fluid, leaving around 30 - 40 miles per flush as half is contained within the gearbox itself.

Thanks very much for your reply. Do you know roughly how much fluid this will take. I dont want to over or underfill it thank Martin

as above that looks fairly normal. I would be concerned if there were any chucks of metal. Auto gearboxes have clutch packs that produce wear and shavings in operation.
