Lane Monitoring System

On my dashboard there is this light.

pressing the corresponding button on the left of the steering wheel

Causes the symbol to light up green.

WHat does this system do? The manual says it's the 'Lane Monitoring System' but doesn't say what it does - I am assuming that it looks for the lane indicators and if the vehicle drifts over (maybe without indicating?) it sounds an alert.

I suppose the best answer is to take it for a drive and see what happens, but maybe someone here knows?

Cheers.

Yes it alerts you when you drift out of the lane

I went out on a run and the green indicator turned off after a few seconds and when I crossed a lane it diid nothing, so something is either missing or broken. What sensors does it use - the front camera maybe?

Until I find out where the sensors are I will keep it turned on and see what happens. Thanks for your help.

It uses the cameras, but I think if you have removed the original stereo it won't work anymore.

Cheers - the head unit had been replaced before I got it so this looks to be a pointless button on the dash at the moment. I can't say I am too fussed.

Normally bottom front ns and os bumper little black boxes...

Would I be able to see them from the front or are they hidden behind the bumper and I would need to be underneath?

I would be surprised to have the button fitted and active but the rest of the system not existing - but saying that who knows what its history is.

I can only imagine that they could be behind the holes with the two slats under the fog lights.

I checked the manual the other day. It uses the camera and the head unit. There are no sensors anywhere for the lane assist.

Cheers Richard, the next time I am crawling underneath I will take a look for the sensors that Alex mentions, but in the meantime I will assume that as the front cameras don't work on the replacement WinCE head unit then that would be why the lane monitoring system activates and then turns itself off.

Thanks everyone.

I found this thread particularly interesting.

I have a 2006 MZ, with most of the bells and whistles.

I have a 'unit/gizmo' on the underside of each external rear view mirror.

I have never used lane monitoring, but had always thought those 'sensors' were for (my phrase) white line monitoring.

I still have the original head unit; archaic but works fine for me (ludite).

I need to check my handbooks, although I don't doubt my learned colleagues are correct.
