Good morning Chris and thank you for the comments.

1 Yes I have the sensor for the auto lights, although I suspect its sensitivity need adjusting somehow because the lights won’t come on in the Dartmoor gloom, just when nightfall makes it sufficiently dark.

2 I clearly have the other sensor which you identify as ‘climate control’ but which then begs the question: what is climate control when I have fans aplenty and air conditioning, no other switch that is marked climate control and I can find no reference to it in the manual?

3 OK yes, I can see that the little triangle thing is a sensor for an after market alarm system but, like so much else, I’m not immediately clear how it operates. In fact, I have inadvertently set the alarm off a couple of times and switched it off by simply putting the key into the ignition.
4 There is no bonnet sensor.

    5 An extra horn?

6 I don’t have an extra fob although last week I obtained an expensive second key which has on it a red button with a diagram of what appears to be a blaring speaker but I’m reluctant to try that out on a Sunday morning so as not to make all the neighbours jump out of their skins. It might be alarm related! I’ll try it some time away from civilised society.

I apologise to all and sundry for appearing dumb. I’m beginning to feel I need to attend an Alphard 101 course. When I was young (a long time ago 👴) we only had basic car controls, and plugs and points to contend with, not computers which, we were promised, would make our lives easier. Ha!

You can probably guess that I have other questions but I’ll save those for now so as not to exhaust the forum’s good will 😚

    2) Climate control is, effectively. air conditioning.

    6) I would guess that red button is a Panic Alarm.

It's no wonder these machines can be referred to as "Toys".

Hi, yes it's the current Japanese Vin on "ANH20-1234567". I have only been sent a photo of the Auction Sheet as the original was sent to the DVLA for registration (is that required?). I would have liked the CarVX check just to confirm independently though....

I don't know if the Auction Sheet is required by DVLA; but it does substantiate year of manufacture, the VIN, and the distance covered (all of which the DVLA definitely need).

I have never used CarVX as it (probably) would not have provided the info I wanted.

From my reading of threads; some members seem very happy with the report, others a little disappointed.

The Auction Sheet should be extremely thorough regarding damage. Mine listed all 'damage'.

From memory, it does not cover mechanical items (i.e. MOT type items).

My report was very 'clean'; so clearly anything that was not faulty was not listed !

Roger and Lee, thank you, you’re spot on accurate with the light sensors. Tried the card trick and, yes, they work perfectly. As for the other bits and pieces I shall, indeed, ignore them, at least until they start to bother me too much 🙂

If you choose to remove the 'bits and pieces', be careful, they are probably still live.

Only 12v but you do not want any 'fireworks'.

Hi. I took a photo of the VIN on the Alphard I’m looking to buy last week (2011, 2.4) and checked this against the dealers copy of the auction sheet which matched. I wanted to do my own VRX check, but when I put the number in it says “vehicle not found” has anyone had this problem? I just want to verify accident damage and mileage really.

    Thanks

Are you sure it is the VIN ?  At a guess, AH20 something ?

The 'mileage' should be on the auction sheet, as will the VIN.

Do you have a copy of the Auction Sheet ?

As I continue learning about my newly acquired 2007 Alphard 2.4, I find (to me) mysterious objects here and there. The first things to tax my ignorance are shown in the pics in this message. The question is: what are they? They aren’t a problem. They seems to sit there minding their own business, but I am curious. The first two are button shaped, sitting far forward on the right hand side of the dash, close to the windscreen, thus preventing me seeing if there are any marks on them. They are rigid, they do not press.

The second pic is of something that seems to be a sensor, again resting on the right hand side of the dash, with wiring feeding up the column between door and windscreen.

I can find no reference to them in my English translation user’s manual, but I suspect some of you experienced and knowledgeable Alphard owners will know what they are.

Thanks in advance and I hope this is the correct board on which to post this message.

Japanese owners are well known for adding 'extras' to their vehicles.

I think the first photo is light sensors.

The second appears to be a switch or, more likely, a microphone for some piece of add on kit accessory they had.

Most accessories are removed before sale, auction or export.

    I have several.

Just try and ignore them !

Thank you. Yes I've seen that am currently wrestling with DAB as the radio is pretty weak. Don't know much about Internet but it isn't finding that at moment either. As you say patience...lol

If the HU is OEM, I doubt you will get the internet from it, or anything other than Radio 2.

Bluetooth phone yes, but I never heard anything about the internet.

Although the HU will play DVDs, MDs, CDs (even 'remembers' them) I have a Laptop, specially for the van, which will connect to the internet virtually anywhere, plays DVDs etc.

    Just a thought for you.

Roger could you please pm me your vin no. As yours is factory fitted I like to see if it shows on part lookup system

Hi Lee. Of course. Tomorrow morning, if that's OK.

Easier to go out to the van rather than search for the paperwork !

    Hi Lee,

I have a facelifted Gen 1 with factory cruise (flyby wire).

2005 seems to be the key date.

Hi thanks for your responses. No this is the standard car no conversion. I have checked out all the fuses I can find and the cable connections are all good. I can’t see anything obvious and I do regularly check fluids and battery. Is there any relay for the alternator or more fuses other than the two units by the battery please?

I think fuses may be a red herring.

    Fuses don't normally go intermittent.

There are more fuse boxes, and not necessarily easy to get at !

Unless you need to check specific fuses, imho, randomly removing and re inserting fuses is likely to potentially do more harm than good.

Problem solved: auto electrician called this morning. He traced the fault to the connection between the tv-associated central light and the three problem lights on the nearside. Seems the feed runs from the centre to those outer lights and, in this particular case, was ‘leaking’ somewhere (whatever that means). I nodded sagely at this information. Short of a major operation to expose the wiring, the cure was to cut that feed, he explained. The result is that the lighting now works as it should from the room lights switches (no idea why!) but the downside is that the central light at the tv no longer works at all. No big deal I don’t suppose because I intend to replace that tv setup at some time or maybe even have a pop-top installed. Anyway, there you go, it was a definite fault now cured. Thanks to all who commented and suggested things.

Next issue: where to install a second, leisure, battery? Anybody already done it? I’ll search the forum shortly.

My leisure battery is under the bench seat in the rear conversion.

There is room for another one on the other side, wiring permitting !

Hi all I’m hoping that someone will be able to help me please. A few months back my Alphard battery started to die when I didn’t use my car for a few days so I replaced the battery with like for like. The fault was still there so called the RAC who said that I had been given a duff battery so I took it back and got another brand new battery. The problem was still happening I took my car to my normal garage that I have used for years they checked it out and said that the alternator was at fault. It was giving a good charge at first but when left for a while the reading it was giving was not constant and was dropping off. I had the alternator replaced with a brand new one and all was fine for a short time. I had about a thirty mile journey to my son stopped for an hour or two had a few miles run around to the shop and back stopped again for an hour or two. When driving back home after about five miles the battery warning light was coming on and off intermittent. I carried on with my journey to try and get back home but after another 15 - 20 miles the engine management light ABS light and a few others started to come on I pulled over and as I did the car just died. I tried to turn it back on but nothing after waiting for two hours for RAC it started first time and was driven onto a flatbed. We got back home the guy drove it off the flatbed no problem but when I went to start it again to get it onto my driveway it only just turned over. I checked the fuses today they all looked fine I put the key in and when I turned it it was completely dead so I turned the key off then back on this time all the lights came on as they should and it started no problem I gave it a bit of a rev then after about 40 seconds heard a click like a relay switching the battery warning light came on then it died again. I had checked the battery earlier and it was fully charged. If anyone can help me please I would greatly appreciate it. Sorry for the long winded description. Thank you.

    Hello Brian,

As the cold weather approaches you must ensure your battery remains fully charged at all times; otherwise electrical gremlins will start to appear.

If you don't use your van every day, set up a trickle charger to keep it topped up. I use a CTEK.

( NB. The CTEK will perform an alternator test, although I don't know how 'good' that test is).

Batteries need to be tested under heavy load, otherwise the output voltage will be much higher and misleading.

Halfords or Kwik Fit can perform the test. Probably at no charge.

With a new battery and a new alternator, it seems safe to assume the 'problem' lies elsewhere.

Ensure all your battery connections are tight; no movement at the terminals between leads and terminal.

Check for any loose earth leads.

Ensure your room/mood lights are off.

Check all your lights, in the dark, and ensure they all all fully off.

Does the clock need resetting, or the windows after these issues ?

    Good luck.

If you do have a camper, get the leisure battery tested (or disconnected).

Hi everyone and happy new year!

I'm a new owner of a special Vellfire edition Gazoo sport ( GS) and I was wondering if there is any other member a owner of  a GS edition ( Alphard/Vellfire), because I've got some questions regarding the suspension and brake pads and discs parts.

Un located in London ( Essex border) and I would like also to get some information regarding a garage which can deal with Vellfire/Alphard.

    Many thanks,

    Cosmin.

Caution! I have an ongoing claim, started Oct 13 2023.

I'm using Safeguard (part of Swinton), and yes, Highway Insurance is also the underwriter. Good price c£325 with 2 years no claims and £100 excess.

LV have been completely hopeless. Firstly, they asked me for recommended campervan repairers(!!), then picked a local firm but omitted to mention they changed their mind and went for one 40 miles away. The repairer refused to pick up my Alphard (too far), so I called LV and they arranged it on Nov 10 2023, but far too early, as the spares have yet to get there, and are not due until 19 Jan.  The repairer then helpfully told me the spares (the pop top roof in this case) are not standard Toyota (yes, it's a specialist van people!).

Certainly using a campervan broker you would expect some related knowledge by the underwriter during the claim process.

    I'll be researching better underwriters.

I am with Highway, through Scenic.

I had the misfortune to suffer a broken windscreen in the summer.

Autoglass checked their list of contracted Insurers and I was fully covered.

I did pay a 70 pounds excess, and the screen did take a month to arrive.

Fitted on my drive with no issues.

    I found Autoglass exceptional.

My insurance this year did increase but only by 20 pounds !

Good luck with the outcome of your claim.

You raise a very good point regarding pop tops not being OEM and therefore more difficult to source.

    Hi everyone,

I have a 2008 20 series Vellfire. Trying to change indicator bulbs to LED's, not having much luck getting any to work correctly unfortunately.

Anyone here managed it successfully and would mind sharing what LED bulbs they used? Have bought Osram ones, but when fitted I get the rapid flashing (I'm guessing due to lower current it pulls, giving the car a false impression there's a defective bulb)

    Thanks,

    Matthew
