The you tube videos are false. It is someone merely pushing 2 or 3 onscreen buttons for a minute, while trying to guess what they are doing. Pointless waste of everyones time.

There is NO English settings in the software in the NHZN W57 head unit.......... its a Japanese interface for Japan users only, these head units were never intended for English users, unless they understood the language!

Not one of these videos shows a definite explanatory walk through that shows the change from Japanese to English for the NHZN W57 Av multimedia nav system.

Translation is done by phone google translate app, point the camera at the screen or book and read whats been deciphered.

I've been through 3 owner manual books that way !

Sorry. I did not check them. I should have.

My elderly in-laws find it very hard to locate & push in the seatbelts on the 2nd & 3rd row seats.!!!

I bought some extenders from Amazon only to find out when they arrived & I tried plugging them in

that the fitting although they look the same are infact a different size.!!!

Has anyone else encountered this problem or know where to buy the correct sized extenders.???

    Hello Rojie,

    Thanks for the reply.

My concern is why the front lcd panel doesn't open, when buttons pressed.

If it opened I could at least play a cd or mp3 on an Sd card.

Alternatively I'd remove the unit and put a single din plate facia in with a single standard head unit. But again it's about finding the din facia to fit in the first place.

    OK slow progress.

There does seem to be yuutube video on how to change to English.

Most of the later units can be changed.

    Try Navigationdisk.

    There are others too

    Hello again,

I was reluctant to offer an opinion on the LCD panel.

Clearly it could be jammed or even broken.

Not helpful to you at all, I'm afraid

I don't recall any other member having the same issue.

I have a different unit so cannot help you.

I will check my paperwork to see if I can find any info on your unit, but I am not hopeful

    Hello everyone,

For those of you who have this Navigation System NHZN W57. I wanted to ask a few questions, see if I could get any help, before removing the unit from the vehicle.

I have the hard back copies of the NHZN W57 stereo manuals, theres 3 in total. And I have used the Android Google translate app to go through every page of them.

There's no option anywhere to change the language from Japanese to English on the stereo menu pages.  It's locked according to country of manufacture.

    http://www.tph.co.jp/room/x8/avn/avn_manual/07model/NHZN-W57_Audio.pdf

Theres no security code on it.

    1) What I want to ask is, why won't the front panel open when the eject button is pressed (page 1 -10 pdf). And why it won't open from the touchscreen, from both touch onscreen selections (page 1 -14 pdf)?

The buttons beep when pressed but the panel wont flip down. I've set the angle of display from small to big (page 1 -14 pdf). But the screen panel still doesn't open.

    2) Are these NHZN W57 units re- flashable with a UK software conversion package of some sort for the main menus and sat nav maps , main radio and dvd functions?

Are the cables that connect to the rear of the stereo compatible with any English stereo head unit with CCD (camera) ? Without having to install a new rear camera and other wires?

Has anyone upgraded the head unit and used the same in vehicle wiring that the old unit was attached to?

The device powers up and is in full Japanese, text, speech instructions etc. But not managed to tune the radio in or play a cd/dvd because of the panel not opening up.

It seems a good piece of kit just the remove and throw away.

Thanks for reading. If any one can answer, much appreciated.

    Hi again Domino,

As a generalisation the Japanese head units won't receive FM; just Radio 2 usually.

They won't receive TV either as the UK and Japanese systems are different.

Sat Nav won't work either as the head unit cannot connect to the correct satellites.

If you replace the head unit, with some replacements you will lose the rear cameras and some steering controls; but not all replacements are so effected.

    Do your research carefully.

The DVD should work but may need NTSC discs or s suitable set up.

    Not very helpful I know.

Head unit replacement is a very popular topic on the Forum.

    Happy reading

Hi, I’ve used the search function but can’t quite find the answer to this question - what is a recommended head unit which will give me:

    * UK DAB

    * Apple CarPlay

    * Rear Camera Function

    * Steering Wheel controls

    * Compatible with 18 speakers

ideally it would also let me run the rear screen as well but I’m prepared to give this up, if needed, in order to manage the above.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hello Chris,

I don't believe there is a 'recommended' head unit; but, hopefully, you are likely to receive several suggestions.

    Good Luck

I am seriously considering buying an Alphard campervan and have joined the forum seeking advice to help in my choice

First off, a hybrid seems attractive for the economy but I have some concerns there

    1. At over 8 years old the drive battery could be getting towards the end of its life. Am I worrying unnecessarily?

    2. I've heard of people having problems with the 12v battery when the vehicle is little used (I believe the hybrid has a smaller 12v battery). Being retired I generally use the car just 2, 3 or 4 times a week and that only about 4 miles each way. Am I likely to have similar problems?

Secondly, if not a hybrid, should I go for the 2.4 or th 3 litre?

And finally, do members have any recommendations for dealers near to me (Hampshire)

    Thanks in advance

    Chris

P.S. A face to face chat with an Alphard camper owner would be very welcome

Hello, I’ve joined the fold this week having put a deposit down on a 2009 V6 Alphard, currently en-route from Japan.

Sticking with the luxury passenger van side of things for that moment but might be tempted by a conversion in years to come.

Hoping to tap some of the incredible knowledge already floating round this forum.

    Hi Rojie;

All is still original, I don't see the point of replacing the head unit due to the loss of camera functionality etc. I have a stand alone SATNAV that does the job, and my mobile phone is connected to original system. I use google translate to navigate through the original head unit, which I find interesting and fun. Only had the Vehicle for a couple of weeks so still on a learning curve. It is a very comfortable ride and the engine is sweet. Recently had the hybrid battery replaced and I was there to see it done, the rest of the vehicle is immaculate for its age and its just passed MOT with no advisories. So happy days

    Happy Alpharding,

Eightseater.blog.com is very useful with the HDD head-unit.

    Thanks Rojie;

I tried mine yesterday with adapter specific to this outlet and no power, (silly me) didn't think to look for on/off switch. I have rear screen on the roof and that isn't working either, I wonder if the switch could be the issue too.

As a wild guess I wonder whether when your rear fog light fitted the switch and feed were hijacked !

I don't have the Theatre System. I believe it uses a standard HDD head unit but has extra amplifiers under the front passenger seat.

Do you still have the original head unit?

My guess is someone has been fiddling with the wiring.

Be aware that the units have low power (100w) capacity anyway; so are only suitable for a small load.

They are wired through the ignition.

Could be the fuse has blown ? They can be damaged by inrush current so beware loads with high initial current draw.

I am hoping it is the switch needs actuating !

But that won't explain your roof system.

Hi, have just registered with the Alphard Club. We have had our Alphard camper for 6 months now, and we absolutely love it. We are after getting a pop top this year, please could anyone recommend somewhere for it to be supplied and fitted. Based in Buckinghamshire. Thank You.

Hi I just came across this on Amazon and wondered if anyone on here had come across it and found it helpful

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Alphard-2002-2008-English-Language-Handbook/dp/1869765230/

17 of the 18 reviews were 4 or 5, but there was one 1 star which felt it tried to cover too many models over too many years.

    We have a 2005 Alphard.

    Hi Penny,

    Welcome to the Forum.

These manuals are excellent, and I recommend all owners have one.

They are 'official' translations performed by a company authorised by Toyota. However

They are Owners Manuals, not a Maintenance Manual.

They cover operational issues, what all the buttons, bells and whistles do.

For example, although they contain information on what (Toyota) fluids to use, they do not explain how to change them

Make sure you get the Hybrid version, which has about 50 pages covering the Hybrid.

The rest of the text is the same as for a non Hybrid.

For Ali's benefit, they do not state the emissions.

So, my Alphard is now back on the road.

The fuse in the battery bit, and a fuse under the bonnet linking to the hybrid battery. Both have been replaced and she started up first time.

Really useful knowledge from this site, thank you very much. Especially Lee (Picaso) who spotted the problem correctly and the auto electrician who really knew his stuff.

I do love this camper but am now looking for something a little bigger.

    Thank you everyone.

We are all so glad you got it fixed.

If you are so pleased with your Auto Electrician; why don't you give them a mention, by name, to assist other members should they need the same type of help.

    Good Morning, Tony,

Thank you for that - I haven't been near a car fusebox for decades (old mini... say no more)..

Yes, it does still have that original part.  Electronic faults that just increase consumption a little and not a lot are pretty rare...   Does the original media centre have a permanent supply also? I'd hoped that it might and it might just be me leaving it in a particular mode.

I might take the time to make a non-contact current sensor - so I can sense whether a fuse has current flow without actually pulling it.  Happy days.

I wasn't aware that there is information on the fuse locations in the handbook. I couldn't find the battery information there... Looks like I need to invest in an English copy and not just scan the Japanese with "Lens".

Buy the JPNZ Owners Manual (in English too) from ebay.

    Every owner should have it.

Good detail on fuses and locations.

Plenty of other really useful information.

I doubt is the Toll reader.

Most of us have those (almost, if not, standard equipment) and most of us don't have the current drain problem.

Hi has anyone swivelled the second row of single seats permanently or added a swivel system.

I have a semi permanent, non swivelling, middle row Captains seat configuration.

It is not easy to achieve.

Alphards are available with swivel seating for the middle row. So seating could be available.

Do you have Captains seats ?

If you do, you will need to replace (some of) the seat rails !

If you already have the one plus one and a half seating, it may swivel already !

If you would like more detail of my set up, please send me a PM.

The present battery is a YBX5096 80AH 740CCA - which appears to be larger than the standard.

It's OK if I use the car every day but is self-discharging if I leave the car unused for a couple of weeks.

I jump started it from my other half's mobility scooter - but I get the distinct impression that that isn't appreciated.... So probably best to replace it.

What would you suggest as a suitable replacement?

    Hello Keith,

    Welcome to the Forum.

it is essential at this time of year, especially in these cold 'snaps',  to keep your battery fully charged.

Mine has a habit of self discharging, and is brand new.

It turned out that the battery I replaced it with was fine.

Imho, Tanya is a good source for batteries.

    Hello everyone

I use a Toyota main dealer to service my car over the 3 years I have owned it and I have been very happy with the standard of service so far.

I have been supplied with a video of underneath so I know the work does need doing.

I have been quoted £621 parts with £600 labour bill to replace the rear differencial front mount & rear axle bushes.

Can any one advise if this is an ok price.

    Many thanks

    Hello Horse !

    Thanks Roger,

Pretty sure the Toyota dealership over here will not be too helpful from what I’ve heard (but happy to be proved wrong) I will probably go the place who used to service my Bongo for me, they were very accommodating and eager to help when other garages turned their nose up at me.

Have seen a 2012 Hybrid online but not sure about their reliability, would I be better just looking at a petrol one? My last two cars have been hybrid so I’m used to them and my Mum actually had a 2016 Toyota Yaris Hybrid but I remember it had a few little quirks, which once she was used to, were fine but were frustrating initially.

Yes a trip to the mainland, is probably my best bet, think I’ll wait for that Irish Sea to calm down a bit first though! 😆

I cannot advise you, one way or the other, on a hybrid. as I have never had one nor know anyone, personally, that has had one.

The Alphies are complex up market vehicles and have their own little quirks, like any other marque.

Surfing this Forum will yield lots of very helpful information, not least the names and locations of the 'better' vendors.

I am sure many existing owners of hybrids will comment, and welcome your hybrid experience to the Forum.
