What kind of battery do I need

Featured Replies

Hello everyone

I need a new battery. My Alphard is imported from Japan. Year made 2011.
I am looking to replace my battery.
Can anyone suggest which model should I get from halford?

Thank you !!!!

Hi Tony!

I'd personally suggest Tayna batteries in Bodelwyddan, North Wales.

They'll save you a fortune, and will send it to you next day.

My car has an 027 battery fitted. I'm not saying that's right, or for yours though, it was put on by the previous owner.

Cheers, Nev

Hi Alex!

And I agree with you!

If I'm buying a battery, I try to look for the higher amp rating and "cold cranking amps" in the size. There can be quite a difference in performance for different manufacturers hey!

And these cars do have a LOT of electrical kit!

Just looked at Tayna, and for my reg they suggest an 068 battery.

Perhaps when I'm home later I'll do some research on physical size difference to the one that's on mine. The guy I bought our car from clearly had one die shortly after he got it from the importer, and bought one local to him, as the receipt for it is in the folder!

Cheers, Nev

So, from my tape measure, a size 068 won't fit in the battery tray on mine.

And there isn't that much difference in amp grunt to the 027 option.

But the one I have in it, a "Starting Bull" is at the bottom end on the range, 510 cca, whereas Varta, Bosch and Exide have 610, 610, and 640 models!!

And that's without going to AGM type! They go to 680!!

 Cheers, Nev

Funny I was just looking for a battery myself. I've had a couple of close calls the last few weeks where it's taken a couple tries to crank. It's still got the Panasonic battery in it from Japan with the LifeWINK attached which indicates the battery health which was flashing red at me yesterday so I think it's time. The battery was fitted in 2021 thanks to previous installer writing the date on it.

Gonna have to measure mine too as I'm getting conflicting info online. For example I'm reading that the Bosch S4 026 fits but when I've used part checkers on some sites it comes back as not compatible but on Tayna it comes up as a suitable option.

Apparently Toyota recommend at least 550 CCA for the 3.5l so I'm just going to go with the highest CCA rating I can get my hands on with the cold season on its way.

My shortlist is currently the VARTA Blue Dynamic E23, Bosch S4 026 or the Yuasa Silver YBX5068.

After a bit of research I eventually purchased for my ggh25 the Bosch S4 E41, EFB 72ah, 760cca, fits the battery tray nice, worth considering, bought from Tanya Batteries.

Hi Phil!

I just had a look at that one, and at 261mm wide (rather than 242 for my 027 ), it could just squidge into mine.

Most were 266 to 270mm.

I'm reckoning if it did in yours it jolly well should do, same car model!!

But - how did you go on with the retaining bracket across the top as it's 30mm higher than the 027 battery?

Did it need any bending to clamp properly? Not a big deal really!

The back is simple as it's the usual rod / nut with plenty of "slack" on the thread, but the front fixing is a bolt directly into the metal frame. Was it easy enough to use a longer bolt and spacer?

Cheers, Nev

Hi Nev,

Went straight in no modifications needed.

Jolly Blooming Marvellous!!!

And a monster of an output for the size!

Hi Tony!

How did you go on with sourcing a new battery?

I have been considering replacing that low amp rated battery on ours, and having bought a simple battery tester, it was just a little slower cranking over on a couple of very cold mornings.

On testing it, it measured in at 420 cca out of 510. However, after a small charge, it was still starting the engine fine though!

I tried a new 027 battery in the tray, and when I went to clamp it down, it was obvious that the clamp was made for a taller battery!

I then tried an 068 size - as per the Bosch S4 E41 that @Philllx fitted to his - and as was already said, fitted nicely with no modifications!

That's clearly the battery that the tray and clamp were designed for!

I got mine locally in Stockport, from Advanced Battery Supplies. I opted for one of their own brand models, an EFB type, 068, with 75ah and 760cca, and 5 year warranty.

Certainly seems to crank over a little faster, and fire up a tiny bit quicker, or maybe it's just psychological hey!!

No problem recognising both fobs, the head unit kept the radio stations and the other settings, all the windows still worked on Auto, but I did have to open and close manually the boot to make it work with the motor again.

Hi Everyone! Happy New Year

Just as another reference, I just replaced by original factory fit Yuasa Battery GS 90D23L with

Bosch S4 026 Type 068 (70Ah 630cch)

It fits like a glove !

Original Battery Dimension(appx): L230 x W170 x H200

Bosch S4 032 - 068 Stated Dimensions: L261 x W175 x H225

Its fits fine as the H225 relates to the top of the terminal , the actual height to the top surface is as original @ 200mm

The tray easily accommodates this slightly Wider and longer battery no issue....... only thing is, the insulation wrap around card thing that you have from original , is for the bin !

Thank you to contributors above. I have just bought a 2014 GGH20 3.5 having been without an Alphard for a while, and because I left the vehicle unused for a few weeks , the standard 55D23L battery was discharged a fair bit down to 12.4 volts. So I have been working out what would be best as an upgraded battery. I should have looked on here first ! I came to the conclusion that an EFB type would be an improvement and the spec for BOSCH S4 E41 ( 72AH/760A CCA ) or VARTA N72 ( 72AH/760A CCA ) are promising including correct dimensions for the battery tray. I was wondering about the insulation jacket, as that woould not fit afterwards, but maybe this is not needed in any case.

Interesting, just removed my dud Bosch and labelling says S3 007, 640A (EN), 70 Ah 12v

It is bigger than original in that it overhangs tray & top clamp had been elongated to fit! 🤔

As my Alphy is a campervan conversion (before I got it) & everything was working fine I’m tempted to stick with same spec/size battery.

Hi Everyone! Happy New Year

Hi, mine is a ANH20 2.5 camper conversion . Absolutely no ill affects after installing the Bosch S4 026. Many miles and camping trips covered with the new battery.

Your performance specs of the Bosch S3 are almost identical to the S4. Just confirming the S4 026 size fits in the tray with original clamp no bother. (Apologies if there is any confusion as somehow in my post it’s also mentioned a S4 032, this must be a typo, the battery I used is a S4 026 as per first lines of my post

On these imports the “55D23L or 90D23L” marking is the Japanese sizing and post orientation, so the first step is matching physical size, terminal layout, and the hold down clamp, then worry about Ah and CCA. For ANH20 and GGH20 owners in the UK, a very common upgrade is a UK Type 068 battery (Bosch S4 026 or similar) because it gives you more capacity and cranking, and it generally sits in the tray fine. The height figure can look scary on paper, but it includes the terminal height and most people report no bonnet clearance issues.

Still worth a quick measure if you have extra covers or sound deadening. Tradeoffs to be aware of If your Alphard has stop start (some Vellfires do), you want EFB or AGM. If it does not have stop start, a decent conventional flooded lead acid like the 068 is usually fine and better value. Bigger Ah helps if the car sits for weeks (alarms, keyless entry, trackers, aftermarket head units all nibble away). But it will not fix a parasitic drain, it just masks it for longer. Practical next steps Check what you have now: D23L means positive on the left as you look at the posts. Some UK batteries are the opposite, so make sure the polarity matches your cables.

Measure your tray length and check the clamp reaches. Most 068s are about 261 mm long vs roughly 230 mm for the D23. If you are regularly leaving it parked, consider a smart maintenance charger on the jump point or battery, and maybe get the standby current checked if it drops quickly again. If you post whether yours is ANH20 or GGH20 and whether it has stop start or any extras like camper kit, dashcams or trackers, people can steer you to the best exact battery type and spec.

Let us know what you end up fitting and if it solved the sitting issue )
